Training tips
- Pull-ups pay off: with the 100-point ceiling, a few extra reps are often the fastest way to climb a class.
- Practise the plank in the test position (forearms, straight line from head to heels) and build up with timed holds two or three times a week.
- For the run, mix one interval session and one tempo run per week with easy miles; the targets table shows the time you need for each points level.
Frequently asked questions
What events are in the Marine Corps PFT?
The PFT has three events: pull-ups or push-ups, a forearm plank (which replaced crunches) and a 3-mile run. Each event is worth up to 100 points, except push-ups, which are capped at 70, so the maximum total is 300.
What PFT score do you need for each class?
1st Class is 235-300 points, 2nd Class is 200-234 and 3rd Class is 150-199. You must also meet the minimum in every event; a total below 150 or a failed event is a failing PFT.
Why do push-ups only count for 70 points?
The Marine Corps scores push-ups lower than pull-ups to encourage Marines to train for pull-ups. Choosing push-ups means your maximum PFT score is 270.
What is the plank standard for the PFT?
Under the current tables the plank is scored the same for all ages and both sexes, with about 1:03 as the minimum (40 points) and 3:45 as the maximum (100 points).
How accurate is this PFT calculator?
It uses the minimum and maximum standards for each age group and sex and interpolates linearly between them, rounding down. The official tables assign points rep by rep and second by second, so your official score can differ by a few points. You can enter values from the current official chart to override the built-in ones.
What is the difference between the PFT and the CFT?
The PFT measures general fitness with pull-ups or push-ups, the plank and a 3-mile run. The Combat Fitness Test (CFT) uses combat-related events: movement to contact (an 880-yard sprint), ammunition can lifts and maneuver under fire. Marines take both each year at different times.
