How to use the Bowling Score Calculator
- Add your players. Type a name and press Add player; remove anyone with the × next to their name. Two example bowlers are loaded so you can see how it works.
- Start a new game to clear the example scores while keeping the players.
- Tap the pins knocked down for each ball: a number, – for a miss, / for a spare or X for a strike. Buttons that would be impossible are greyed out.
- Watch the scorecard. The current bowler and frame are highlighted, totals appear as soon as bonuses are known and the Max column shows the best score still possible.
- Check a finished game by choosing a player under Type a whole game, entering the rolls (for example X X 9/ 8- …) and pressing Calculate score.

Tips for keeping score
- Strikes are worth the most when they come in a row: a strike followed by two more strikes scores the full 30 points.
- Picking up spares is the steadiest way to raise an average: a game of 9-count first balls with every spare converted (and a 9 on the bonus ball) scores 190 without a single strike.
- A foul counts as 0 pins for that ball; enter it as – or 0.
- The Max column is handy late in a game to see whether a player can still catch the leader.
Frequently asked questions
How is bowling scored?
A game has 10 frames. In each frame you get two balls to knock down 10 pins. An open frame scores the pins knocked down. A spare (all 10 pins with two balls) scores 10 plus the pins on your next ball. A strike (all 10 pins on the first ball) scores 10 plus the pins on your next two balls.
How does the 10th frame work?
If you roll a strike or a spare in the 10th frame you earn bonus balls so the bonus can be counted: one extra ball after a spare, two after a strike. That means the 10th frame can have up to three balls and is worth up to 30 points (three strikes). Without a strike or spare the game ends after two balls.
What is the highest possible bowling score?
300, a perfect game: 12 strikes in a row (one in each of frames 1 to 9 and three in the 10th). Each frame then scores 30 points.
What does the Max column mean?
It is the highest final score the player can still reach, calculated by assuming every remaining ball knocks down all the pins still standing. Before the first ball it is 300; a single open frame or missed strike lowers it.
Why is there no total shown in my latest frame?
A strike or spare can't be scored until the next balls are rolled, because their bonus depends on them. The total appears as soon as the needed balls are entered: one ball after a spare, two balls after a strike.
How do I type a game?
Use X for a strike, / for a spare, - (or 0) for a miss and digits 1 to 9 for pins. Spaces are optional. For example "X 7/ 9- X X 8/ 9- X 7/ XX8" scores 192. The calculator checks that every roll is possible and tells you where an error is.
What score do you get for all spares?
It depends on the first ball of each frame. Ten frames of 9 and a spare with a 9 bonus ball score 190; all spares with 5 on the first ball score 150. A game alternating strikes and spares (a "Dutch 200") scores exactly 200.
