CSV Splitter
Break a big CSV into smaller files that Excel, Google Sheets or an import tool will accept. Split by a number of rows, into a set number of equal files, or into one file per value of a column. The header row is repeated in every file and everything downloads as one ZIP.
How to use the CSV Splitter
- Choose your CSV file or drop it on the upload area. Its rows and columns are counted instantly.
- Pick how to split: Rows per file (e.g. 1,000), Number of files (equal parts), or Column value (one file per country, month, customer…).
- Keep the header option on so every part starts with the column names.
- Check the list of output files with their row ranges and sizes.
- Click Download all as ZIP, or download single parts from the list.
Which split mode should I use?
| Mode | Example | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Rows per file | 120,000 rows, 50,000 per file → 3 files (50,000 + 50,000 + 20,000) | Import limits of CRMs, mailing tools, shop platforms and databases |
| Number of files | 120,000 rows into 4 files → 30,000 rows each | Sharing work between people or parallel jobs |
| Column value | Split on country → orders_US.csv, orders_FR.csv … | Per-region, per-month or per-customer reports |
Common row limits
| Program | Limit |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Excel (per sheet) | 1,048,576 rows × 16,384 columns |
| Google Sheets (per spreadsheet) | 10,000,000 cells |
| LibreOffice Calc (per sheet, version 7.4+) | 1,048,576 rows × 16,384 columns |
When a part needs to go into Excel, tick Add UTF-8 BOM so names with accents display correctly, or convert it with CSV to Excel. To join split files again later, use the CSV Merger.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a large CSV file into smaller files?
Open the file here, choose Rows per file and enter the size you need, for example 50,000. The list shows each part with its row range. Click Download all as ZIP to get every part, each with the header row at the top.
Is the header row included in every file?
Yes, as long as 'First row is a header' is ticked. The first non-blank line is treated as the header and copied to the top of each output file; it is not counted as a data row.
Can I split a CSV by the values in a column?
Yes. Choose Column value and pick the column. Every distinct value gets its own file named after it, for example data_Austin.csv and data_Leeds.csv, keeping the original row order inside each file.
Will quoted fields with commas or line breaks break the split?
No. The splitter follows the CSV quoting rules (RFC 4180), so a field like "Smith, John" or a quoted address spanning two lines stays inside its row. Rows are copied exactly as they appear in the original file.
How large a CSV can I split?
Files of several hundred megabytes and millions of rows work in a modern desktop browser because the file is processed in memory on your computer. Very large files may be slow on phones.
Why split a CSV at all?
Many programs have limits: Excel shows at most 1,048,576 rows per sheet, Google Sheets has a 10 million cell limit, and many CRMs, email tools and e-commerce platforms cap import files at a few MB or a set number of rows.
Is my data safe?
Yes. The file is read and split by JavaScript in your browser and the ZIP is built locally. Nothing is uploaded.
