How to use the WHOIS Lookup

  1. Type a domain, IP address or AS number, such as example.com, 8.8.8.8 or AS15169. You can also paste a full URL or an email address.
  2. Click Look up WHOIS or press Enter.
  3. Read the summary: registrar, creation and expiry dates, domain age, name servers and DNSSEC.
  4. Check the status codes: each one is explained, for example clientTransferProhibited means the domain is locked against transfers.
  5. Copy or download the result, open the Raw RDAP tab for every field, or copy a link to share the lookup.

What the WHOIS dates mean

FieldMeaning
CreatedWhen the current registration began. If a domain expired and was registered again by someone else, this date resets, so it shows the age of the current registration, not the first one ever.
ExpiresThe end of the paid registration period. Most registrars renew automatically shortly before this date.
Last updatedThe last change to the registration, such as new name servers, a contact update or a renewal.
Last transferWhen the domain last moved to a different registrar (shown when the registry publishes it).

The life cycle of an expiring domain (gTLDs)

  1. Expiry date. The registration ends unless it is renewed. The site may stop working if the registrar parks the domain.
  2. Auto-renew grace period (0 to 45 days). The owner can usually still renew at the normal price. Status: autoRenewPeriod or a registrar-specific hold.
  3. Redemption grace period (30 days). The domain is deleted by the registrar but the previous owner can restore it, usually for an extra fee. Status: redemptionPeriod.
  4. Pending delete (5 days). Nobody can renew or restore it. Status: pendingDelete.
  5. Released. The name becomes available to register again on a first-come basis.

Country-code domains (.uk, .de, .fr, …) follow their own registry rules, so the periods can differ.

Domain status codes

Status codes come from the EPP standard (RFC 5731) and appear in RDAP in plain words such as client transfer prohibited. Codes that start with client are set by the registrar, usually on the owner's behalf; codes that start with server are set by the registry. Locks like clientTransferProhibited are a normal safety feature, while clientHold or serverHold mean the domain has been taken offline.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

Both tell you who registered a domain or IP address. WHOIS is the original plain-text protocol on port 43. RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol, RFC 9082 and 9083) is its standardized successor: it returns structured JSON over HTTPS and supports internationalized names. ICANN requires generic top-level domains to offer RDAP, and since January 2025 it has replaced WHOIS as the authoritative source for them.

Why is the owner's name hidden or REDACTED?

Since the GDPR took effect in 2018, most registries and registrars hide personal data of individual registrants. You will usually see the registrar, dates, status and name servers, while name, email and address are redacted. To contact an owner, use the registrar's contact form or abuse email.

How do I check when a domain expires?

Look up the domain and read the Expires date. Most domains auto-renew, so a date that has passed does not always mean the domain is free: after expiry there is usually a grace period of up to 45 days, then a 30-day redemption period, before the name is deleted and becomes available.

Why does it say a domain is not found?

A not-found answer from the registry usually means the domain is not registered and may be available. Some country-code domains (such as .de) do not offer RDAP at all; for those, use the registry's own WHOIS website.

What does clientTransferProhibited mean?

It is a registrar lock that prevents the domain from being transferred to another registrar without the owner first removing the lock. It is a normal security setting and does not indicate a problem. Statuses starting with server are set by the registry, and those starting with client are set by the registrar.

Is this lookup private?

The query goes directly from your browser to rdap.org, which redirects to the official registry server for that domain or IP range. FreeToolCabin does not see or store your lookups.
