How to use the Mailto Link Generator


  1. Add recipients. Type one or more email addresses in To; use CC and BCC if needed. Separate several addresses with commas.
  2. Write the subject and body. Press Enter for new lines; the tool encodes them so mail apps show real line breaks.
  3. Pick the output. Copy the raw mailto link, the HTML anchor, Markdown, or a styled button snippet.
  4. Test it. Click Open in email app to check the draft in your own mail program.
  5. Share offline. Download the QR code as PNG or SVG for posters, flyers or business cards.


Mailto link syntax


A mailto URL is defined by RFC 6068. The addresses come first, then optional header fields after a question mark, separated by &:

Inside an HTML href attribute the & between parameters may also be written as &, which is what the HTML output uses. Browsers turn it back into & before opening the mail app.



Tips for reliable email links


    

  • Keep pre-filled bodies short. Mail apps differ in how much text they accept from a link, and long QR codes are harder to scan.
    • 

  • Mailto only works when the visitor has an email app set up. On public pages, also show the address as text so people using webmail can copy it.
    • 

  • Formatting such as bold text, links or images cannot be added through a mailto link; the body is always plain text.

Frequently asked questions


What is a mailto link?
A mailto link is a URL that starts with mailto: instead of https://. When someone clicks it, their default email program opens a new message with the recipient, and optionally the subject, cc, bcc and body, already filled in.


How do I add a subject and body to a mailto link?
Add them as query parameters after the address: mailto:[email protected]?subject=Hello&body=Hi%20there. Separate parameters with &, and percent-encode the values so spaces become %20 and line breaks become %0D%0A. This generator does the encoding for you.


Why do spaces show as plus signs in my email subject?
Plus signs appear when a value is encoded as a web form (space = +) instead of a URI. In mailto links a + is a literal plus, so spaces must be encoded as %20. This tool always uses %20.


How do I add a line break in a mailto body?
Use %0D%0A (carriage return plus line feed), as recommended by RFC 6068. Typing Enter in the body field here inserts it automatically. HTML tags such as <br> do not work because mail clients treat the body as plain text.


Is there a maximum length for a mailto link?
The standard sets no limit, but browsers and mail programs do. Links of a few thousand characters can be cut off or ignored, especially in Outlook on Windows. Keep the body short; the tool warns you above 2,000 characters.


Can I add an attachment with a mailto link?
No. The mailto standard has no attachment parameter, and mail clients ignore unofficial ones for security reasons. Link to a file online in the body instead.


Will spammers harvest an email address in a mailto link?
They can, because the address is visible in the page source. For public pages consider a contact form or a role address with a good spam filter. The link itself is still the most compatible way to start an email.
