How to use the Words to Number

  1. Type or paste the number in words, for example two thousand and twenty-six.
  2. For several numbers, put each one on its own line to convert the whole list at once.
  3. Choose a thousands separator: comma, none, thin space or dot.
  4. Read the digits in the result box, or the table for a list. A spelling mistake is flagged with a suggestion.
  5. Press Copy result or Download CSV to keep the converted numbers.

How written numbers turn into digits

English numbers are built from a small set of words. Units (one to nine), teens (ten to nineteen) and tens (twenty to ninety) make every value up to 99. Hundred multiplies the group in front of it, and the scale words thousand, million, billion and trillion close a group of three digits.

Worked example: four million six hundred and twelve thousand and thirty

GroupValue× ScaleSubtotal
four41,000,0004,000,000
six hundred and twelve6121,000612,000
thirty30130
Total4,612,030

Scale words always run from largest to smallest, so a phrase like one thousand million is reported as an error rather than guessed.

Tips for clean results

  • Check spelling: forty has no “u”, and ninety keeps the “e”. Misspelled words are flagged with a suggestion.
  • “One third” and “two thirds” never end, so they are shown rounded to 10 decimal places together with the exact fraction.
  • “One hundredth” is read as the ordinal 100th; write “a hundredth” when you mean the fraction 0.01.
  • Use batch mode to clean up spreadsheets: paste a column of written amounts, then download the CSV with the digits next to each line.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert words to numbers?

Break the words into groups at each scale word. Each group below one thousand is worked out first (hundreds, tens and units), then multiplied by its scale (thousand, million, billion) and the groups are added together. Two million three hundred thousand and five is 2,000,000 + 300,000 + 5 = 2,300,005.

Does it matter if I write "and"?

No. "One hundred and five" (British) and "one hundred five" (American) both give 105. Hyphens and commas are optional too, so "twenty-one" and "twenty one" are the same.

Can it convert decimals and fractions?

Yes. Use "point" followed by digits, such as "three point one four" for 3.14. Fractions like "and a half", "and a quarter", "three quarters", "five eighths" or "two thirds" are converted as well. Repeating decimals such as one third are rounded to 10 decimal places and the exact fraction is shown.

What about ordinals like twenty-first?

Ordinal words are converted to their number with the suffix, so "twenty-first" becomes 21st and "one hundred and third" becomes 103rd. An ordinal has to be the last word of the number.

Can I convert money written in words?

Yes. "Five dollars and twenty cents" becomes $5.20 and "ten pounds fifty pence" becomes £10.50. Cents must be a whole number from 0 to 99.

What is the largest number it understands?

Scale words up to quadrillion (10^15) are supported, plus the Indian lakh and crore. All arithmetic is exact, so large values are never rounded.
