How shoe size systems work

  • UK and US sizes use the barleycorn, one third of an inch (8.47 mm), as the step between whole sizes. Half sizes add one sixth of an inch. US and UK scales start from different zero points, which is why the numbers differ.
  • EU (Paris point) sizes step by two-thirds of a centimetre (6.67 mm) and are based on the length of the shoe last, not the foot, so EU 42 is a last about 28 cm long.
  • JP and Mondopoint sizes are simply the foot length, in centimetres (JP) or millimetres (Mondopoint). They are the most accurate if you know your measurement.

Kids' shoe sizes by age

Children's feet grow fast, so check their size every two to three months. These ages are only a rough guide:

Leave about 1 to 1.5 cm (a thumb's width) between the longest toe and the end of the shoe so children have room to walk and grow.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert US shoe sizes to EU?

Find your US size in the chart and read across. For men, US 9 is about EU 42.5 and US 10 is about EU 44. For women, US 8 is about EU 39. EU sizes go up by about two-thirds of a centimetre per size (one Paris point).

What is the difference between men's and women's shoe sizes?

In the US system a women's size is about 1.5 larger than the men's size for the same foot. A men's 8 fits roughly like a women's 9.5. UK, EU and cm sizes are the same for men and women.

How do UK and US sizes compare?

UK sizes are smaller numbers than US sizes. For men a UK size is usually 0.5 to 1 below the US size (US 9 ≈ UK 8.5), and for women about 2 below (US 8 ≈ UK 6).

How do I measure my foot for shoe size?

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe, and measure from the wall to the mark. Measure both feet in the evening, when feet are largest, and use the longer one.

What is a JP or Mondopoint shoe size?

Japanese and Mondopoint sizes are based on foot length. JP size 27 is for a foot about 27 cm long, and Mondopoint writes the same length in millimetres (270). Ski boots and military footwear commonly use Mondopoint.

What do C and Y mean in kids' shoe sizes?

C stands for child (toddler and little kids) sizes from about 2C to 13.5C. After 13.5C the scale restarts at 1Y (youth). Big kids' sizes from 3.5Y to 7Y are the same as men's US sizes.

Why does my size differ between brands?

There is no single international standard for shoe size labels, and each brand uses its own lasts (foot-shaped moulds). Expect differences of half a size or more, especially between athletic, dress and European brands.
