How to use the Dog Training Clicker
Pick a clicker sound and set the tone and volume. Soft is best for puppies or sound-sensitive dogs.
Charge the clicker first: press Start charging and give a small treat right after every click.
Start training: ask for a behavior (or wait for it) and tap the big button the instant it happens.
Treat quickly and press Treat given (or T). The timer shows whether you rewarded within your goal.
Keep sessions short. Choose a session length and stop when the chime plays, ideally while your dog still wants more.
The three rules of clicker timing
Click during the behavior, not after. Click as the dog's bottom touches the floor for a sit, not when they are already standing up again.
One click, one treat. Every click is a promise. Even if you click by mistake, pay the treat so the sound keeps its meaning.
The click ends the behavior. It is fine if your dog breaks position to come for the treat; then reset and ask again.

Day
Goal
How
1
Charge the clicker
2 sessions of 10–15 click-treat reps using Charge the clicker
2
Name game / eye contact
Click the moment your dog looks at you, then treat
3
Sit
Lure or wait for a sit; click as it happens. Add the word "sit" once the dog offers it reliably
4
Down
Click the moment elbows touch the floor
5
Hand target (touch)
Hold out two fingers; click when the nose bumps them
6–7
Mix and add distance
Short sessions mixing known behaviors, gradually adding mild distractions
Clicker vs. a marker word
A marker word such as "Yes!" works on the same principle and is always with you. The click is shorter, more precise and sounds identical every time, which makes it ideal for teaching new behaviors and shaping small steps. Many trainers use the clicker while teaching and switch to a marker word once the behavior is learned. If you use a marker word, choose Silent: I say my marker word as the clicker type: say your word and tap the big button at the same moment, and the counter, session timer and treat timer keep working without any sound.
Frequently asked questions
What is clicker training?
Clicker training is a positive-reinforcement method where a short, distinct sound marks the exact moment an animal does the right thing, and a reward follows. Because the click is faster and more consistent than a spoken word, it helps the dog understand precisely which action earned the treat.
How do I charge or load a clicker?
Before teaching any behavior, click and immediately give a small treat about 10 to 20 times, a few seconds apart, without asking for anything. The dog learns that the click predicts food. The Charge the clicker mode does the clicking and tells you when to treat.
Does an online clicker work as well as a real one?
Yes, as long as the sound is consistent and you click at the right moment. This clicker is synthesized in your browser and plays the same way every time. Phone speakers vary, so test the volume and tone with your dog in a quiet room first.
How fast should I give the treat after the click?
Aim to deliver the treat within about one to three seconds. The click already marked the behavior, so you do not need to rush, but a long delay weakens the link. The treat timer turns amber and red when you go over your goal.
My dog is scared of the clicking sound. What can I do?
Switch to the Soft clicker, lower the volume and pick a lower tone, or put the phone in a pocket to muffle it. Pair the quiet click with very tasty treats, and raise the volume gradually only if your dog stays relaxed.
How long should a training session be?
Short sessions work best: many trainers use 3 to 5 minutes, especially for puppies, ending while the dog is still engaged. Several short sessions a day usually beat one long one. Use the session timer to keep yourself on track.
Can I use this clicker for cats, horses or other pets?
Yes. Clicker training works for many animals, including cats, horses, rabbits and birds. The principle is the same: click to mark the moment, then reward. Use the soft setting for small or noise-sensitive animals.
