How to copy an image to the clipboard
To paste an image here, the clipboard has to hold the picture itself, not a link to it. These are the quickest ways to get an image onto the clipboard on each system.
| What you want | Windows | macOS | Phone / tablet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screenshot of part of the screen | Win+Shift+S | ⌘+Ctrl+Shift+4 | Take a screenshot, then Share › Copy |
| Screenshot of the whole screen | PrtScn (or Snipping Tool) | ⌘+Ctrl+Shift+3 | Device screenshot buttons, then Copy |
| Image on a web page | Right-click › Copy image | Control-click › Copy Image | Long-press › Copy image |
| Image file in a folder | Use Open image file or drag the file onto the paste area (copying a file in a file manager copies the file reference, not the pixels). | ||
Which format should you save as?
| Format | Compression | Transparency | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | Lossless | Yes | Screenshots, text, diagrams, logos, anything you will edit again |
| JPG | Lossy (quality 40–100%) | No | Photos for email and documents; opens everywhere |
| WebP | Lossy here (quality 40–100%) | Yes | Smallest files for websites and modern apps |
A good rule: keep screenshots as PNG so text stays crisp, and use JPG or WebP at 80–90% quality for photos, where the difference is hard to see but the file is often five to ten times smaller.
Frequently asked questions
How do I save an image from my clipboard as a file?
Copy the image or take a screenshot, open this page and press Ctrl+V (⌘+V on a Mac). The image appears in the preview; choose PNG, JPG or WebP and press Download. The file goes to your browser's Downloads folder with the name you choose.
Why does nothing happen when I paste?
The clipboard probably contains text or a link instead of image data. In most browsers, right-click the picture and choose Copy image (not Copy image address). On Windows, Win+Shift+S puts a screenshot on the clipboard; on a Mac, use ⌘+Ctrl+Shift+4 to copy a screenshot instead of saving it to the desktop.
What is the difference between PNG, JPG and WebP?
PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so it is best for screenshots, text and graphics. JPG uses lossy compression that makes photos much smaller but has no transparency. WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency and is usually 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality, but some older programs cannot open it.
Why is the PNG bigger than the image I copied?
Clipboard images are stored uncompressed, and the original file (for example a JPG on a website) is not on the clipboard, only its pixels. Saving a photo as PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which takes more space. Choose JPG or WebP at 80–90% quality for a much smaller file.
Can I copy an image to the clipboard with this tool?
Yes. Open or paste any image and press Copy image. It is placed on the clipboard as a PNG, which you can paste into chat apps, email, documents and image editors. Browsers only allow writing PNG images to the clipboard, so other formats are converted.
What happens to transparent areas when I save as JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with a background color. White is the default; when the pasted image has transparency, a color picker appears so you can choose another color. Save as PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.
Are my pasted images uploaded?
No. Pasting, converting and downloading all happen in your browser using the Clipboard and Canvas APIs. Images stay in memory only until you close or reload the page.
