WEBP to GIF
Animated WebP files play in browsers but many chat apps, forums and older editors only accept GIF. Drop a WebP here to get a GIF with the same frames, the same timing and the loop setting you choose. All decoding and encoding runs on your device.

How to use the WEBP to GIF
- Choose a WebP by dropping it on the box, pasting it, or clicking Choose WebP. Try a sample animation to see it in action.
- Check the details: frame count, length, loop count and frame delays are read from the file.
- Adjust the options if needed: loop, speed, size, number of colors, dithering and transparency. The GIF is rebuilt automatically.
- Compare the GIF preview with the original WebP side by side.
- Download GIF when you are happy with it.
How an animated WebP is turned into a GIF
An animated WebP is a RIFF container: a VP8X header with the canvas size, an ANIM chunk with the loop count, and one ANMF chunk per frame. Each frame chunk holds its position on the canvas, its duration in milliseconds, a blending flag and a disposal flag, followed by the compressed picture (lossy VP8 with an optional ALPH alpha chunk, or lossless VP8L). Frames are often only the part of the picture that changed.
The converter decodes every frame with the browser's own WebP decoder, places it on a full-size canvas following the blend and dispose rules, and captures the finished picture. The GIF encoder then builds one shared palette from all frames, maps each frame to it (with dithering if chosen), stores only the region that changed from the previous frame, and compresses it with LZW.
WebP and GIF animation compared
| Animated WebP | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Colors per frame | Full 24-bit color | Up to 256 from a palette |
| Transparency | 8-bit alpha (soft edges) | 1 color fully transparent |
| Compression | VP8 lossy or WebP lossless | LZW, lossless on the palette |
| Frame delay unit | 1 millisecond | 10 milliseconds |
| Loop count meaning | Total plays (0 = forever) | Extra repeats (0 = forever) |
| Support | Modern browsers and many apps | Practically everywhere |
Tips for smaller, cleaner GIFs
- Size matters most: 50% size gives about a quarter of the pixels and usually less than half the file size.
- Stickers, logos and cartoons look best with dithering set to None and often fit in 64 colors.
- For photos and video-like clips keep 256 colors and Floyd–Steinberg dithering, or consider an MP4 instead with WebP to MP4, which is far smaller.
- To change the size or speed of an existing GIF later, use Resize GIF or the GIF Speed Changer.
Frequently asked questions
Does the GIF keep the animation timing?
Yes. Every frame keeps its own delay from the WebP. GIF stores delays in hundredths of a second, so each delay is rounded to the nearest 10 ms using a running total, which keeps the overall length the same instead of letting rounding errors add up. Delays shorter than 20 ms are raised to 20 ms, because most browsers slow GIF frames below that to 100 ms.
Why does my GIF look grainier than the WebP?
A GIF frame can use at most 256 colors, while a WebP can show millions. Photos and smooth gradients therefore need dithering, which mixes palette colors in small patterns. Floyd–Steinberg dithering gives the smoothest look; choose None for cartoons and stickers with flat colors.
Why is the GIF bigger than the WebP?
WebP uses modern VP8 or lossless compression, while GIF uses the much older LZW method with a limited palette. A GIF is often 2 to 5 times the size of the same animated WebP. Reduce the size to 75% or 50%, use fewer colors or choose ordered dithering to get a smaller file.
Can GIF keep the transparent background of a WebP?
Partly. WebP supports smooth, partially transparent edges, while GIF pixels are either fully transparent or fully opaque. Pixels that are more than half transparent become transparent, and the rest are blended with the edge color you choose. Pick an edge color close to the background where the GIF will be shown for the cleanest result.
How do the loop options work?
A WebP stores how many times it plays in total, where 0 means forever. GIF stores the number of extra repeats in a NETSCAPE block. Same as the WebP copies the original setting; you can also choose forever, play once (no loop block) or a fixed number of plays.
Can I convert WhatsApp or Telegram WebP stickers?
Yes, sticker files in WebP format, animated or still, convert like any other WebP. Transparent sticker backgrounds stay transparent in the GIF. Only convert stickers you are allowed to reuse.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The WebP is unpacked and the GIF is encoded by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
