JPG to SVG
Turn a JPG logo, drawing or photo into a true vector SVG made of filled shapes, not a bitmap wrapped in an SVG file. Choose a preset, adjust the number of colors and the detail level, compare the result side by side and download an SVG that scales to any size.

How to use the JPG to SVG
- Add a JPG by dropping it on the box, pasting it or clicking Choose image. A sample logo is traced on load so you can try the controls.
- Pick a preset: Logo for flat graphics, Illustration for drawings, Photo for pictures and Black & white for line art, signatures or cutting files.
- Fine-tune the number of colors, the detail and the smoothing. The preview updates automatically.
- Compare the original and the SVG side by side and check the size and path count.
- Download the SVG or copy the code into your project.
How JPG to SVG tracing works
- Smoothing: a light blur removes JPG block artifacts and grain that would otherwise become thousands of tiny shapes.
- Color quantization: the millions of colors in the photo are reduced to the palette size you choose using k-means clustering, which picks the colors that best represent the picture.
- Cleanup: regions smaller than the speckle size are merged into the surrounding color.
- Tracing: the outline of every color region is followed pixel by pixel, then simplified into straight lines and curves. The detail setting controls how closely the curves follow the pixels.
- SVG output: each region becomes a filled
<path>, ordered so large background shapes are drawn first.
Choosing settings
| Image | Preset | Colors | Typical result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Logo, icon, flat graphic | Logo | 2 to 8 | Clean shapes, small file, near-perfect match |
| Cartoon, illustration, clipart | Illustration | 8 to 24 | Faithful look with smooth curves |
| Photo, portrait, landscape | Photo | 24 to 64 | Posterized, painted style; larger file |
| Signature, sketch, text, stencil | Black & white | 2 | Single-color shapes for cutting or engraving |
Tips for better vectors
- Start from the largest, sharpest version of the image you have. Tracing cannot invent detail a tiny or blurry JPG does not contain.
- Crop away everything you do not need first, and remove busy backgrounds with the Background Remover.
- Run the downloaded file through the SVG Optimizer to shave off extra bytes. Need a bitmap again? Use SVG to JPG.
- For PNG images with transparency, the PNG to SVG Converter can keep the background transparent.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a JPG to SVG?
Drop the JPG into the converter above. It reduces the image to a set of flat colors, traces the outline of every color region and writes those outlines as SVG paths. Pick a preset, adjust colors and detail until the preview looks right, then download the SVG. It is free with no sign-up.
Is the result a real vector or just an embedded image?
It is a real vector. Many online converters simply wrap the JPG inside an SVG file, which is still a bitmap. This tool traces the picture into path elements, so you can scale it to any size, edit the shapes in Illustrator, Inkscape or Figma and cut it with a plotter.
What kind of images give the best SVG?
Logos, icons, cartoons, signatures, text and other graphics with flat colors and clear edges trace best. Photos can be traced too, but they turn into a posterized, painting-like look and need many colors and paths, which makes large files.
How many colors should I choose?
Use the number of colors that actually appear in the artwork: 2 for black and white line art, 3 to 8 for most logos, 12 to 24 for illustrations and 24 to 64 for photos. Fewer colors give smaller, cleaner files. JPG compression adds faint noise, so slight smoothing usually helps.
Why does my SVG have small specks or blotches?
JPG artifacts and photo grain create tiny regions of slightly different color. Increase Remove speckles to merge small regions into their neighbours, raise smoothing, or lower the color count.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Tracing runs in your browser, in a background thread on your own device. The image is never sent to a server. Only the open-source ImageTracer.js program is downloaded, and if it is unavailable the built-in tracer is used instead.
Can I use the SVG for a Cricut or laser cutter?
Yes. Choose the Black & white preset to get a single-color vector of the dark shapes, which most cutting and engraving software accepts. Check the preview for thin lines that may be too fine to cut.
