Animated WEBP to MP4
Social networks and messaging apps often refuse animated WebP files but happily accept MP4 video. Drop a WebP here and it is decoded frame by frame and encoded to MP4 with your browser's built-in video encoder, ready to post. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use the Animated WEBP to MP4
- Choose an animated WebP by dropping it on the box, pasting it or clicking Choose WebP, or try the sample animation.
- Set the length: keep the original length or repeat the animation, for example until the video is at least 5 seconds long.
- Pick frame timing and size. Constant 30 fps works everywhere; original delays keep the exact timing.
- Choose a background color if the WebP has transparent areas.
- Preview and download the MP4 when the encoding finishes.
How the conversion works
An animated WebP stores its frames as separate pictures with a duration in milliseconds, plus rules for how each frame is blended onto the previous one. The tool rebuilds every complete frame on a canvas, then hands them to the browser's WebCodecs VideoEncoder, which compresses them to H.264 (or VP9) far faster than real time. Finally a small MP4 writer packs the compressed frames into a standard MP4 file with the index (moov) at the start, so the video starts playing immediately when streamed.
For constant frame rate output, every video frame shows whichever WebP frame is on screen at that moment. A 70 ms WebP frame therefore lasts about 2 frames at 30 fps, and a 400 ms frame lasts 12. The total duration stays the same.
Animated WebP, GIF and MP4 compared
| Animated WebP | GIF | MP4 (H.264) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical file size | Small | Large | Smallest for photo-like content |
| Colors | Millions | 256 per frame | Millions |
| Transparency | Yes | 1-bit | No |
| Loops automatically | Yes | Yes | Only if the player loops it |
| Accepted by social apps | Rarely | Often | Almost always |

Tips for sharing
- Instagram and many other apps reject clips shorter than about 3 seconds; use Repeat to at least 5 s for short loops.
- Small stickers (512 × 512 or less) look sharper on phones when doubled with the 2× option.
- Need a looping image instead of a video? Use WebP to GIF. Already have a GIF? Try GIF to MP4.
- If the MP4 is still too large for a messenger, shrink it with the Video Compressor.
Frequently asked questions
Why convert an animated WebP to MP4?
MP4 with H.264 video is accepted by almost every phone, computer, social network and messenger, while animated WebP is still rejected by many upload forms and apps. A video is also usually smaller than the same animation as a GIF, and it can be posted where only videos are allowed.
Does it work in every browser?
The tool uses WebCodecs, the browser's built-in video encoder, available in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Most of these encode H.264. If a browser offers only VP9, the tool still produces an MP4 file but with VP9 video, which modern browsers and Android play but some older players do not. The line under the drop zone tells you which encoder your browser offers.
What happens to transparent areas?
MP4 video has no transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are placed on the background color you choose. White suits most stickers; pick black or your page color to match where the video will be shown.
Why are the width and height sometimes changed by one pixel?
H.264 and VP9 video with 4:2:0 color needs even dimensions, so an odd width or height is rounded to the nearest even number. The picture is scaled slightly to fill it, which is invisible in practice.
Which frame timing should I choose?
Constant 30 fps is the safest for Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and editing software: each original frame is shown for as many video frames as its delay needs. Original frame delays writes the exact WebP timing as a variable frame rate video, which gives the most faithful timing and the smallest file but may be re-timed by some editors.
Some apps need videos of at least a few seconds. What can I do?
Use the Length option. Repeat to at least 5 s (or 10 s, 15 s) plays the animation as many whole times as needed to reach that length, so short stickers and loops become videos long enough to post.
Is my WebP uploaded?
No. Decoding, encoding and MP4 writing all happen in your browser, so your animation never leaves your device.
