Photo to Coloring Page
Turn a favorite photo of your kids, pet, house or holiday into a printable coloring page. The tool finds the outlines, thickens them into clean black lines and removes speckles, then you print it or download a PDF or PNG.

How to use the Photo to Coloring Page
- Add a photo: drop it on the box, paste it, or press Choose photo. A sample picture is shown so you can try the settings right away.
- Pick a style: Simple for small children, Balanced for most photos, Detailed for older kids and adults, or Bold for thick outlines.
- Fine-tune with the sliders: Detail decides how many lines appear, Line weight sets their thickness, and Cleanup removes small specks.
- Compare with the original using the before/after slider.
- Download the coloring page as a PDF (A4 or Letter, with an optional title) or PNG, or press Print.
How a photo becomes a coloring page
A good coloring page needs closed, even, dark outlines and big empty areas to color in. A plain edge filter gives thin, broken, noisy lines, so this tool runs a short pipeline designed for line art:
- Grayscale and contrast stretch: brightness is computed as 0.299 R + 0.587 G + 0.114 B, then the darkest and brightest 1% of pixels are stretched to pure black and white so dim or hazy photos still produce lines.
- Smoothing: an optional Gaussian blur removes fine texture (fur, grass, skin pores, JPEG noise) before edges are searched.
- Difference of Gaussians (DoG): the image is blurred with two radii (σ and 1.8σ) and the wider blur is subtracted from the narrower one. The result is strongly negative on the dark side of every edge, which gives a single clean line instead of a double outline. The Detail slider lowers σ and the threshold to reveal more edges.
- Cleanup: connected groups of line pixels smaller than a minimum area are deleted, removing specks and dust.
- Thickening: a chamfer distance transform measures how far every pixel is from the nearest line, and pixels within the Line weight radius are inked, with a soft one-pixel edge so the outlines print smoothly.
Which settings to use
| Who is coloring | Style | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Toddlers and preschool (2-5) | Simple | Few, thick lines and large shapes that are easy to stay inside with crayons |
| Kids (6-10) | Balanced | Recognisable details with medium lines for markers and colored pencils |
| Older kids and adults | Detailed | Fine lines and many small areas for relaxing, detailed coloring |
| Posters, stencils, felt-tip markers | Bold | Very thick outlines that survive copying and stay visible under dark colors |
Tips for great results
- Crop first: a subject that fills most of the frame gives bigger shapes and fewer background lines.
- Busy background? Raise Smoothing and Cleanup, or lower Detail until only the main outlines remain.
- Missing outlines? Raise Detail. Low-contrast areas (white dog on snow) need more detail to be found.
- Use Light gray lines to make a tracing sheet for practising drawing or for watercolor, where black lines would show through.
- Printing: the PDF is centered on A4 or Letter with a 10 mm margin. Print at 100% (actual size) and choose "black and white" or "grayscale" to save color ink.
Frequently asked questions
How do I turn a photo into a coloring page?
Open the photo in this tool, choose a style and adjust the Detail, Line weight and Cleanup sliders until the outlines look right. Then press Download PDF or Print. Everything happens in your browser, so it takes only a few seconds and the photo is never uploaded.
Which photos make the best coloring pages?
Sharp photos with a clear subject, good lighting and a simple background work best: pets, portraits, cars, houses, flowers and toys. Busy backgrounds such as leaves, gravel or crowds create many small lines; crop the photo first or lower the Detail slider.
How does the outline detection work?
The photo is converted to grayscale, contrast-stretched and blurred twice with two different Gaussian radii. Subtracting the wider blur from the narrower one (a Difference of Gaussians) highlights the dark side of every edge. Pixels below a threshold become lines, tiny specks are removed, and the lines are thickened with a distance transform for smooth, even outlines.
Why are there too many little lines?
Fine texture like hair, grass or fabric creates many edges. Lower Detail, raise Smoothing to blur away texture before edge detection, or raise Cleanup to delete small line fragments.
What paper size does the PDF use?
You can choose A4 (210 × 297 mm) or US Letter (8.5 × 11 in). The page orientation follows the photo shape automatically, the drawing is centered with a 10 mm margin, and an optional title is printed at the top.
Can I use the coloring pages commercially?
The tool puts no restrictions on the output. You do need the rights to the original photo: your own photos are fine, but pictures of copyrighted characters or other people's photos may not be.
What resolution is the download?
The final page is rendered at up to 2400 pixels on the longest side, which prints sharply on A4 or Letter (about 200 to 290 DPI). The live preview uses a smaller size so the sliders respond instantly.
