Lined Paper Generator
Pick a ruling, adjust the line spacing and margins, and print notebook-style paper at home. The live preview shows exactly what you will get.
How to use the Lined Paper Generator
- Choose a style: standard ruled, handwriting practice or Cornell notes.
- Pick a ruling such as wide or college, or type your own spacing.
- Set the margins: header space at the top, the red margin line and the bottom margin.
- Add extras like Name/Date fields or hole-punch guides, and choose colors.
- Download PDF and print at 100% scale, or save a PNG.
Standard line spacings (rulings)
| Ruling | Spacing | Lines on Letter* | Lines on A4* | Who uses it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary / kindergarten | 1/2 in (12.7 mm) | 20 | 21 | Children learning to write (usually with a dashed midline) |
| Wide (legal) ruled | 11/32 in (8.7 mm) | 28 | 30 | Elementary school, large handwriting |
| College ruled | 9/32 in (7.1 mm) | 34 | 37 | High school, university, everyday notes |
| Narrow ruled | 1/4 in (6.35 mm) | 39 | 41 | Small handwriting, more text per page |
| Metric 8 mm | 8 mm | 31 | 33 | European school notebooks |
*With a 25 mm header space and a 12 mm bottom margin. Formula: lines = ⌊(page height − top − bottom) ÷ spacing⌋ + 1. Example for college ruling on Letter: ⌊(279.4 − 25 − 12) ÷ 7.144⌋ + 1 = ⌊33.9⌋ + 1 = 34 lines.
Handwriting paper proportions
Each handwriting row has three guide lines. The distance from the top line to the baseline is the row height you choose; the dashed midline sits exactly halfway, marking the height of lowercase letters such as a, c and e. Tall letters (b, d, k) and capitals reach the top line, and letters with tails (g, p, y) dip into the half-row gap below the baseline. Rows are 1.5 × the row height apart, so a 1/2 inch row gives 3/4 inch (19 mm) from one row to the next.
- Pre-K and kindergarten: 1 in (25 mm) rows. Use Custom spacing 25 mm.
- Grades 1–2: 1/2 in (12.7 mm) or 5/8 in (16 mm) rows.
- Grade 3 and up: 3/8 in (9.5 mm) rows, then wide ruled paper.
The Cornell note-taking method
Developed at Cornell University in the 1950s, this layout splits each page into three parts. Take notes during the lecture in the wide right-hand column. Afterwards, write key questions and keywords in the left cue column (about 2.5 in / 63.5 mm wide), and summarize the page in a few sentences in the box at the bottom (about 2 in / 50.8 mm tall). To review, cover the notes and answer the questions in the cue column from memory.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between wide ruled and college ruled?
Wide ruled (also called legal ruled) has 11/32 inch (8.7 mm) between lines and is used in elementary schools. College ruled has 9/32 inch (7.1 mm) spacing, fits more lines on a page and is the most common notebook ruling for older students and adults. Narrow ruled is 1/4 inch (6.35 mm).
What is handwriting paper?
Handwriting or primary paper has groups of three lines: a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline. The midline shows how tall lowercase letters should be, which helps children learn consistent letter sizes.
What is the Cornell note-taking layout?
Cornell notes divide the page into a narrow cue column on the left for questions and keywords, a wide notes area on the right, and a summary box at the bottom. The generator draws all three areas with ruled lines.
How do I print it at the right size?
Print the PDF at "Actual size" or 100%. "Fit to page" or "Shrink to printable area" makes the line spacing a few percent smaller than chosen.
How many lines are on a page of lined paper?
A US Letter sheet with college ruling typically has 32 to 35 lines, and wide ruling about 27 to 30, depending on the header and bottom margins. The generator shows the exact count for your settings.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The paper is drawn and the PDF is created in your browser, so it works privately and even offline once the page is open.
