How to structure a yoga class
| Phase | Share of a 60-min class | Example poses in the library |
|---|---|---|
| Centering & breath | 3-5 min | Easy Seat, Child's Pose |
| Warm-up | 5-10 min | Cat, Cow, Downward-Facing Dog, Low Lunge |
| Sun salutations | 8-12 min | Mountain, Upward Salute, Forward Fold, Halfway Lift, Plank, Chaturanga, Upward Dog |
| Standing & balance | 12-18 min | Warrior I and II, Triangle, Side Angle, Tree, Half Moon, Warrior III |
| Floor: seated, twists, hips | 8-12 min | Staff, Seated Forward Fold, Half Lord of the Fishes, Pigeon, Bound Angle |
| Backbends & inversions | 5-8 min | Bridge, Camel, Supported Shoulder Stand, Legs Up the Wall |
| Cool-down & rest | 8-12 min | Happy Baby, Supine Twist, Corpse Pose (Savasana) |
Hold times by style
- Vinyasa / flow: 1-5 breaths per pose (about 5-30 seconds), linked by movement.
- Hatha: 30-60 seconds per pose with a pause between.
- Yin: 3-5 minutes in passive floor poses such as Pigeon, Bound Angle or Sphinx.
- Restorative: 5-10 minutes in fully supported poses such as Legs Up the Wall.
A slow breath is about 4-6 seconds, so "five breaths" is roughly 20-30 seconds. The total time shown above the sequence adds every hold (twice for poses done on both sides) plus the transition time between poses.
Sequencing tips
- Warm up the spine and hips before deep backbends, twists or hip openers.
- Follow a backbend with a neutral or gentle forward fold, and balance strong poses with rest.
- Do one-sided poses on both sides in the same order (right then left) so students can follow.
- Keep Savasana: 5 minutes for a 60-minute class is a good minimum.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I hold each yoga pose?
In flowing (vinyasa) styles many poses are held for one to five breaths, roughly 5 to 30 seconds. In hatha classes holds of 30 seconds to a minute are common, and in yin or restorative practice poses are held for 3 to 5 minutes or longer. Savasana at the end is usually 5 to 10 minutes. Adjust to your level and comfort.
How should a yoga class be sequenced?
A common structure is: centering and breathing, gentle warm-up (cat-cow, child's pose), sun salutations, standing and balancing poses, a peak pose, seated poses, twists and hip openers, gentle backbends or inversions, a cool-down and finally savasana. The templates follow this arc.
What does 'both sides' do?
For one-sided poses such as warrior II, tree or pigeon, ticking Both sides plays the pose on the right and then on the left, each for the hold time you set. The total class length counts both sides.
How is the total time calculated?
Total time is the sum of every hold (doubled for both-sided poses) plus the transition time between poses multiplied by the number of transitions. For example 12 poses averaging 30 seconds with a 5-second transition take 12 × 30 + 11 × 5 = 415 seconds, about 7 minutes.
Are the voice cues and chimes recorded?
No. Chimes are synthesized with the Web Audio API and announcements use your browser's built-in speech voices, so nothing is downloaded. Voice availability depends on your device.
Is this safe for beginners?
The tool only helps you plan and time a practice; it is not medical advice. Move within a comfortable range, skip any pose that causes pain, and check with a qualified teacher or health professional if you are pregnant, injured or new to yoga.
Is my sequence saved?
Yes, it is stored in your browser's local storage on this device. Use Print class plan or Copy as text to keep or share it elsewhere.
