How to use the Tax Bracket Calculator
Enter your taxable income, or your gross income plus a deduction to subtract.
Pick a sample bracket table or type your own: one line per bracket with the lower threshold and the rate.
Calculate to see the income and tax in each bracket.
Read your marginal and effective rates and how much room is left before the next bracket.
Copy the results or download the bracket table as CSV.
How bracket tax is calculated
For each bracket, tax = (income inside the bracket) × bracket rate, where income inside the bracket is min(income, next threshold) − threshold. Add up all the brackets for the total tax. Then:
Effective rate = total tax ÷ taxable income × 100
Marginal rate = rate of the highest bracket your income reaches
Example with 2025 US single brackets and $85,000 taxable income: 10% × $11,925 = $1,192.50, 12% × $36,550 = $4,386, 22% × $36,525 = $8,035.50. Total tax is $13,614, an effective rate of 16.02% and a marginal rate of 22%.

Common misunderstandings
"A raise pushed me into a higher bracket so I take home less." Not true: only the income above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate.
"My tax rate is my bracket." Your average (effective) rate is lower than your bracket rate.
Deductions save tax at your marginal rate, so a $1,000 deduction in the 22% bracket saves $220.
Frequently asked questions
How do tax brackets work?
In a progressive system each rate only applies to the slice of income inside its bracket. With the 2025 US single brackets, the first $11,925 is taxed at 10%, the next slice up to $48,475 at 12%, and so on. Moving into a higher bracket never reduces your take-home pay, because only the income above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
The marginal rate is the rate on your next dollar of income, the rate of the highest bracket you reach. The effective rate is total tax divided by taxable income, which is always lower than the marginal rate when lower brackets apply.
How do I enter my own brackets?
Write one bracket per line as 'threshold, rate', where the threshold is where that bracket starts. For example '0, 10' then '11925, 12' means 10% up to $11,925 and 12% above it. If the first line starts above 0, income below it is treated as untaxed (like a personal allowance).
What were the 2025 US federal tax brackets?
For single filers in 2025: 10% up to $11,925, 12% up to $48,475, 22% up to $103,350, 24% up to $197,300, 32% up to $250,525, 35% up to $626,350 and 37% above. Married filing jointly thresholds are about double. Both are included as samples; always check the IRS for the current year.
Is the UK sample exact?
It uses the 2025/26 rates for England, Wales and Northern Ireland: 0% personal allowance up to £12,570, 20% to £50,270, 40% to £125,140 and 45% above. It does not apply the personal allowance taper above £100,000 or Scottish rates, so treat it as a simplified example.
Does this include payroll tax, state tax or credits?
No. It applies only the bracket table you enter to taxable income. Social security, Medicare, state or local taxes and tax credits are not included.
Is my income sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser.
