How to use the Job Offer Comparison Calculator
Set your schedule: work days per week and hours per day.
Fill in each offer: salary, bonus, equity per year, match percentage, benefits value and PTO.
Add the commute: daily cost (fuel, transit, parking) and round-trip minutes.
Tick Compare a third offer if you have one, and optionally value your commute time per hour.
Read the ranking and check the side-by-side table to see where each offer wins.
How each offer is valued
Total compensation = salary + bonus + yearly equity + salary × match % + benefits value.
Work days = 52 × work days per week − PTO days. Commute cost = daily cost × work days, and commute hours = round-trip minutes ÷ 60 × work days.
Net value = total compensation − commute cost − commute hours × your time value. Effective hourly rate = (total compensation − commute cost) ÷ (work hours + commute hours).
Example: $90,000 salary, $5,000 bonus, 4% match ($3,600) and $8,000 of benefits gives $106,600 total. With 15 PTO days there are 245 work days; a $12/day, 50-minute commute costs $2,940 and 204 hours, so the effective rate is 103,660 ÷ (1,960 + 204) ≈ $47.90/hr.
How much time a daily commute takes over a year
Based on 240 work days a year. The last two columns show the commute time valued at $20 and $40 per hour.

A 60-minute daily round trip adds 240 hours a year: about six 40-hour weeks. Also weigh things a calculator can't price: career growth, job security, remote flexibility and the people you will work with.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compare two job offers?
Convert everything to a yearly value: base salary, expected bonus, the yearly vesting value of equity, the employer's retirement match and what the employer pays for benefits. Then subtract costs that differ between jobs, such as commuting. The offer with the higher net value pays more, before considering things like growth and job satisfaction.
How do I value equity in a job offer?
For RSUs at a public company, divide the grant value by the vesting years. For startup options, the value is uncertain: a cautious approach is to count little or nothing until there is a liquid market, or to apply a heavy discount to the paper value.
How is the 401(k) match counted?
The match is counted as salary × match %, assuming you contribute enough to get the full match. If the match vests over time and you may leave early, lower it accordingly.
What is the effective hourly rate?
Total compensation minus commute costs, divided by the hours you work plus the hours you spend commuting. It shows how well each job pays for the time it really takes from your week, and fewer PTO days mean more working hours.
Should I put a value on commute time?
It is optional. Many people use a fraction of their hourly pay, for example half, to reflect that commuting time is not free. Leave it at 0 to compare money only.
Does this include taxes?
No. Offers are compared before income tax, which is usually fine when both jobs are in the same tax location. If they are in different states or countries, compare the take-home pay with a paycheck calculator as well.
