Indiana paycheck formula
Indiana base income = gross wages − traditional 401(k) − section 125 deductions
State tax = (base income − exemptions) × 2.95% (2026)
County tax = (base income − exemptions) × your county rate
Net pay = gross − pre-tax deductions − federal − Social Security − Medicare − state − county − after-tax deductions
Example: a single Indianapolis worker earning $55,000 with one exemption has $54,000 of Indiana taxable wages. State tax is $54,000 × 2.95% = $1,593.00 and Marion County tax is $54,000 × 2.02% = $1,090.80, about $103 per biweekly check combined.

Tips for Indiana workers
Moving counties mid-year does not change your county rate until the next January 1; update your WH-4 county fields when you move so the next year is withheld correctly.
Counties can change their local income tax rate, usually effective January 1 or October 1. If your county is not listed or recently changed, choose "Other county" and type the current rate from the Indiana Department of Revenue list.
If both spouses work, avoid both claiming the same dependents on your WH-4 forms, or you may under-withhold.
Bonuses use the same flat Indiana and county rates; only the federal part may use the 22% supplemental rate.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Indiana state income tax rate in 2026?
Indiana has a flat individual income tax. Under the schedule set by the legislature in 2023, the rate is 3.0% for 2025 and 2.95% for 2026, falling to 2.9% in 2027. The rate field is editable so you can match your employer's current withholding tables.
Does Indiana have county income tax?
Yes. All 92 Indiana counties levy a local income tax on top of the state tax. Rates differ by county, from 0.5% (Porter County) to over 3%, and Marion County (Indianapolis) is 2.02%. Your rate is set by the county you lived in on January 1 of the tax year.
How do Indiana WH-4 exemptions work?
Each personal exemption on Form WH-4 (yourself, your spouse, dependents, and being 65 or older or blind) removes $1,000 from your yearly wages before state and county tax. Each qualifying dependent child also gets an additional $1,500 exemption. If you file no WH-4, your employer withholds as if you claimed none.
What if I live in another state but work in Indiana?
Indiana taxes wages earned in the state, and nonresidents also owe county tax based on the county where they work on January 1. Indiana has reciprocal agreements with Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, so residents of those states can file Form WH-47 and pay income tax only to their home state on Indiana wages (county tax does not apply).
Is my 401(k) taxed in Indiana?
Traditional 401(k) and 403(b) contributions are not subject to Indiana state or county income tax when you contribute, because Indiana starts from federal adjusted gross income. They are still subject to Social Security and Medicare tax.
How much is $50,000 a year after taxes in Indiana?
With the default settings (single, Marion County, 5% 401(k), $75 health premium per biweekly check), a $50,000 salary takes home about $1,399 per biweekly paycheck in 2026, after roughly $51 of Indiana tax and $35 of Marion County tax per check.
