Prorated salary formulas
By month, calendar days: (annual salary ÷ 12) × days paid ÷ days in the month
By month, working days: (annual salary ÷ 12) × working days paid ÷ working days in the month
By year, calendar days: annual salary × days paid ÷ 365 (366 in a leap year)
By year, working days: annual salary × working days paid ÷ working days in the year (260–262 for Mon–Fri)
When a period spans several months, each month is prorated on its own and the results are added together.

When proration is used
First paycheck after starting mid-month.
Final paycheck when leaving before the end of a pay period.
Unpaid leave or a change in salary partway through a month.
Part-year bonuses that are paid in proportion to time employed.
Prorated salary = full pay for the period × days paid ÷ days in the period. For a $72,000 salary prorated by month, a month with 22 working days pays $6,000 ÷ 22 = $272.73 per working day, so 12 working days earn $3,272.73.
Calendar days or working days: which is correct?
Both are used. Calendar-day proration divides by all days in the month or year (28–31, or 365/366), while working-day proration divides by working days only. Employment contracts, payroll systems and local law decide which applies, so check yours. The calculator shows both.
Should I prorate by month or by year?
Many payroll systems prorate the monthly salary for a partial month. Others use an annual daily rate (salary ÷ 260 working days or ÷ 365 days) for every day. The results differ slightly because months have different numbers of days.
How many working days are in a year?
A Monday-to-Friday year has 260 or 261 weekdays (262 in some leap years), before public holidays. With 10 or so paid holidays, around 250 days are actually worked, but holidays are usually paid, so they still count for proration.
Are public holidays counted?
This calculator counts every weekday in your work week, which treats public holidays as paid days. If holidays in your period are unpaid, enter them as unpaid days off.
Does this show take-home pay?
No. It shows gross prorated pay. Taxes and deductions are applied by payroll afterwards; use the paycheck calculator for an estimate.
