How to use the Real Hourly Wage Calculator
Enter your pay as an hourly rate or yearly salary, with your effective tax rate.
Add paid hours and weeks worked per year (leave out vacation weeks).
Add hidden time: round-trip commute minutes, unpaid work hours and getting-ready time.
Add work costs: daily commuting cost and monthly costs you only have because you work.
Read your real hourly wage and type a price to see how many hours of work it really costs.
Real income = gross pay − taxes − commute costs − other work costs
Work hours per week = paid hours + unpaid work hours + commute time + getting-ready time
Real hourly wage = real income ÷ (work hours per week × weeks worked)
Cost in hours = price ÷ real hourly wage
Example: a $65,000 salary over 47 working weeks of 40 hours is $34.57 per paid hour. After 24% tax ($49,400 left), $14 a day of commuting ($3,290) and $220 a month of other work costs ($2,640), $43,470 remains. Adding 4 unpaid hours and 5 hours of commuting a week makes 49 hours a week, or 2,303 hours a year, so the real wage is $18.88 an hour, a little more than half the paid rate.

Ways to raise your real hourly wage
Negotiate one or two remote days a week: each one removes a day of commute time and cost.
Track unpaid hours for a month; if they are steady, they are a fair topic for a raise or overtime discussion.
Compare job offers on real hourly wage, not salary: a lower salary close to home can pay more per hour of life.
Cut costs that exist only because of work, such as daily bought lunches or paid parking that a transit pass could replace.
Frequently asked questions
What is a real hourly wage?
It is the money you actually keep from your job divided by all the time the job takes. Real hourly wage = (gross pay − taxes − work-related costs) ÷ (paid hours + unpaid work hours + commute time + other work time). The idea was popularized by the book Your Money or Your Life.
Why is my real hourly wage so much lower than my pay rate?
Three things stack up: taxes take a share of every hour, costs like fuel, parking, work clothes and bought lunches are paid out of what is left, and commute and unpaid hours add time without adding pay. A 50-minute daily commute alone adds over 4 hours a week.
Should I include taxes?
Yes for a true take-home figure. Use your effective tax rate: total federal, state and payroll taxes divided by gross pay. For many US workers this is somewhere between 15% and 30%, which is lower than the top bracket rate.
Which costs count as work costs?
Only costs you would not have if you did not work: commuting, parking, tolls, work clothing and uniforms, extra childcare, lunches and coffees bought because you are at work, professional dues and tools you pay for. Ordinary living costs do not count.
How does working from home change my real wage?
Remote work usually raises the real hourly wage a lot, because commute time and commute costs drop to zero. Try the Remote preset and compare it with your current setup to put a number on a remote or hybrid offer.
What does cost in hours of work mean?
It is the price divided by your real hourly wage. If your real wage is $15 an hour, a $1,200 phone costs 80 hours of your life, about two full work weeks, which can make spending choices clearer.
Does the calculator count paid vacation?
Yes. For a salary, the yearly amount is spread over the weeks you actually work. For hourly pay, tick the paid time off box if you are paid for 52 weeks; untick it if you are only paid for the weeks you work.
