Estimate your Arizona take-home pay and choose the right Form A-4 percentage. Arizona taxes income at a flat 2.5%, but employers withhold whatever rate you pick, from 0.5% to 3.5%. See net pay per check and whether you are headed for a state refund or a bill.

How to use the Arizona Paycheck Calculator
Enter your pay: annual salary, or hourly rate with weekly hours and overtime.
Set the federal W-4 details: filing status, dependent credits and any extra withholding.
Add pre-tax and after-tax deductions such as a 401(k) percentage and health insurance per check.
Choose your Form A-4 percentage (2.0% if you never filed one), any extra Arizona amount and dependents under 17.
Press Calculate take-home pay, then use the A-4 comparison table to pick the lowest rate that still avoids a bill.
How Arizona withholding works
Arizona is unusual: the tax itself is a flat 2.5% of Arizona taxable income, but what your employer withholds is a percentage you choose on Form A-4, applied to your gross taxable wages (pay after 401(k) and section 125 deductions):
Withholding per check = gross taxable wages per check × A-4 rate (0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0% or 3.5%) + any extra amount.
No A-4 on file: the employer must use 2.0%.
0% is allowed only if you expect to owe no Arizona tax for the year.
Actual Arizona tax ≈ (wages − standard deduction) × 2.5% − $100 per dependent under 17.
Because the withholding rate is charged before the standard deduction, picking 2.5% to "match" the tax rate usually over-withholds. The calculator's comparison table shows the projected refund or balance at every A-4 rate.

The pattern is useful: at the default 2.0%, single filers below roughly $80,000 tend to get an Arizona refund and those above it tend to owe a little, because the standard deduction matters less as income rises.
Choosing your Form A-4 rate
Want a small refund? Pick the lowest rate in the comparison table that shows "refund".
Two jobs or a working spouse? Each employer withholds on its own wages only, while the standard deduction is used once, so lean to a higher rate or add an extra amount per check.
Big 401(k) contributions lower both the withholding and the tax, so the right rate barely changes.
Change it any time by giving your employer a new A-4; it applies from the next payroll.
Figures assume Arizona's 2.5% flat rate (tax years 2023 onward) and use the 2026 federal standard deduction for Arizona ($16,100 single), which you can override. Federal tax uses IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 brackets; FICA uses the 2026 wage base of $184,500.
Frequently asked questions
What is Arizona's state income tax rate in 2026?
Arizona has a flat individual income tax rate of 2.5%, in place since tax year 2023. It applies to Arizona taxable income after the standard deduction, so the effective rate on gross pay is lower than 2.5%.
Which Form A-4 percentage should I choose?
Pick the lowest rate that covers your expected Arizona tax. Because withholding is charged on gross taxable wages while the tax is charged after the standard deduction, 1.0% to 2.0% is enough for many single workers. The comparison table shows the projected refund or amount owed at each rate.
What happens if I never filled out an Arizona Form A-4?
Your employer must withhold 2.0% of your gross taxable wages, the default rate. You can file a new A-4 at any time to change it.
Can I elect zero Arizona withholding?
Yes, Form A-4 lets you choose 0% if you expect to owe no Arizona income tax for the year, for example because your income is below the standard deduction. If your situation changes you must file a new A-4.
Does a 401(k) reduce Arizona withholding?
Yes. Arizona withholding is a percentage of the wages subject to federal income tax withholding, so traditional 401(k) and section 125 health deductions lower the Arizona amount too.
What is the Arizona dependent credit?
Arizona gives a $100 credit for each dependent under 17 and $25 for other dependents. It phases out by 5% for each $1,000 of income above $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly). This calculator applies the under-17 credit.
Do Phoenix, Tucson or other Arizona cities tax wages?
No. Arizona cities do not have a local income tax, so the only state-level paycheck deduction is Arizona income tax withholding.
