Decimal hours formulas
Decimal hours express time as a single number in base 10, while clock time uses base 60. Converting between them only needs multiplication or division by 60:
- Decimal hours to minutes: minutes = decimal part × 60. Example: 7.75 h → 0.75 × 60 = 45 → 7:45.
- Minutes to decimal hours: decimal = minutes ÷ 60. Example: 8 h 20 min → 20 ÷ 60 = 0.333… → 8.33 h.
- With seconds: decimal = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600. Example: 1 h 30 min 36 s = 1 + 0.5 + 0.01 = 1.51 h.
- Pay: gross pay = decimal hours × hourly rate. Example: 37.5 h × 18.00 = 675.00.

Worked timesheet example
An employee works Monday 09:00–17:30 with a 30-minute lunch and a Friday night shift 22:00–06:15 with no break.
- Monday: 17:30 − 09:00 = 8 h 30 min; minus 30 min break = 8:00 = 8.00 decimal hours.
- Friday: the end is earlier than the start, so add 24 hours: 06:15 + 24:00 − 22:00 = 8:15 = 8 + 15 ÷ 60 = 8.25 decimal hours.
- Total: 8:00 + 8:15 = 16:15, which is 16.25 decimal hours. At 20.00 per hour, gross pay is 16.25 × 20 = 325.00.
Always add the minutes first and convert the total, rather than rounding each shift, to avoid small rounding errors building up over a pay period.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?
Keep the whole number as the hours, then multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes. For 7.75 hours, 0.75 × 60 = 45, so 7.75 hours is 7 hours 45 minutes (7:45).
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. For example 45 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours, 20 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.33 hours and 6 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.1 hours. Add the result to the whole hours, so 8 hours 20 minutes is 8.33 hours.
What is 7 hours 30 minutes in decimal?
7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 decimal hours, because 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5.
Why does payroll use decimal hours?
Pay is calculated by multiplying hours by an hourly rate, and that only works with decimal numbers. 7:45 multiplied by a rate is meaningless, but 7.75 × 20 = 155 gives the correct pay.
How many decimal places should I use for payroll?
Two decimal places is the most common choice for timesheets and payroll. Some employers round to the nearest quarter hour (0.25), so check your company policy. The converter can show 2, 3 or 4 places.
How does the timesheet handle overnight shifts?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as running past midnight. For example 22:00 to 06:15 with no break is 8 hours 15 minutes, or 8.25 decimal hours.
Is 7.3 hours the same as 7 hours 30 minutes?
No. 7.3 hours is 7 hours 18 minutes, because 0.3 × 60 = 18. 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours. Mixing up the two formats is one of the most common timesheet errors.
