Example time card
| Day | In | Out | Break | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 8:00 AM | 5:00 PM | 60 min | 8:00 |
| Tuesday | 8:00 AM | 6:30 PM | 30 min | 10:00 |
| Wednesday | 8:00 AM | 5:00 PM | 60 min | 8:00 |
| Thursday | 8:00 AM | 7:00 PM | 60 min | 10:00 |
| Friday | 8:00 AM | 4:30 PM | 30 min | 8:00 |
| Total | 44:00 |
With the weekly rule, 40 hours are regular and 4 hours are overtime. At $20 an hour that's 40 × $20 + 4 × $30 = $920. With the daily rule (over 8 hours a day), Tuesday and Thursday each have 2 hours of overtime, which also gives 4 overtime hours here.
This calculator is a helpful estimate. Overtime rules depend on your country, state and contract, so check with your employer or local labor authority for your exact rules.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time, then subtract any unpaid break. For example, 8:30 AM to 5:15 PM is 8 hours 45 minutes; minus a 30-minute lunch gives 8 hours 15 minutes, or 8.25 hours.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5, 45 minutes is 0.75, and 20 minutes is about 0.33. Tick "Show decimal hours" to see every total in decimal form for payroll.
How is overtime calculated?
Under the US federal rule (FLSA), non-exempt employees earn overtime at 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states, such as California, also count hours over 8 in a single day. Choose the rule that matches your job; you can change the limits and multiplier.
Can I enter a night shift that ends after midnight?
Yes. If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, the calculator assumes the shift ended the next day, so 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM counts as 8 hours.
Can I record more than one shift per day?
Yes. Press Add shift and choose the same day. Hours from all shifts on that day are added together, which also matters for daily overtime.
Is my time card saved?
Yes, it is saved in your browser on this device. Nothing is uploaded. Use Export CSV or Print to keep a copy.
