Holidays follow the NYSE rules: a holiday on Saturday is observed the Friday before (except New Year's Day), and one on Sunday the Monday after. Early closes end regular trading at 1:00 pm ET. Rare unscheduled closures (such as national days of mourning) are added when announced; always confirm with the exchange.

Tips for trading outside regular hours
- Liquidity is lower in pre-market and after-hours sessions, so spreads between bid and ask prices are often wider and prices can move sharply.
- Many brokers accept only limit orders in extended hours; market orders placed then usually wait for the 9:30 am open.
- Earnings reports are often released just before the open or just after the close, which is why big moves happen in extended hours.
- Settlement: US stock trades settle one business day after the trade date (T+1), so market holidays can delay when cash from a sale is available.
Frequently asked questions
What are the stock market hours?
The NYSE and Nasdaq regular trading session runs from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, except market holidays. Many brokers also offer pre-market trading from as early as 4:00 am ET and after-hours trading until 8:00 pm ET, though available hours vary by broker.
Is the stock market open on weekends?
No. The NYSE and Nasdaq are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Orders placed over the weekend are usually queued by your broker until the next session opens on Monday, or Tuesday after a Monday holiday.
What holidays is the stock market closed?
US stock markets close for New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday (Presidents Day), Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. When a holiday falls on a Saturday the market closes the Friday before, except for New Year's Day, and when it falls on a Sunday the market closes the Monday after.
When does the stock market close early?
The NYSE and Nasdaq close early, at 1:00 pm ET, on the day after Thanksgiving, on Christmas Eve when it falls on a weekday from Monday to Thursday, and on July 3 when Independence Day falls on a Tuesday to Friday. After-hours trading on those days usually ends at 5:00 pm ET.
Is the stock market open on Good Friday?
No. Good Friday is an NYSE and Nasdaq holiday even though it is not a federal holiday, so stock markets are closed. In 2026 Good Friday is April 3 and in 2027 it is March 26. Bond markets may follow a different schedule.
What time does the stock market open in my time zone?
The opening bell is 9:30 am ET, which is 8:30 am Central, 7:30 am Mountain and 6:30 am Pacific. Because the US changes clocks for daylight saving time, the time in other countries shifts by an hour a few weeks each year; this page converts the times for you automatically.
Is this page connected to a live market data feed?
No. Status is calculated from the official session schedule, the exchange holiday rules and your device clock, so it works without any data feed. Unscheduled closures are rare; check the exchange's announcements on unusual days.
