Tips for parents and teachers
- Hour hand first. Children often read the minute hand as the hour. Saying “short hand, then long hand” out loud each time helps.
- Use the hint button as a mini lesson: it explains where each hand is pointing for the current question.
- Turn on minute numbers for beginners, then switch them off once counting by fives is automatic.
- Mix the answer styles. Digital answers build number sense; word answers (“quarter to”) build the everyday language of time.
- Little and often. One or two rounds a day works better than a long session. Move up a level after two 3-star rounds in a row.
Frequently asked questions
What age is this telling time game for?
It suits children from about 5 to 9 years old. Level 1 (o'clock) and level 2 (half past) match what most children learn in kindergarten and first grade, quarter hours and five-minute times usually come in second grade, and reading to the exact minute in third grade.
How do you read an analog clock?
Look at the short hour hand first: the hour is the last number it has passed. Then look at the long minute hand and count by fives from the 12 – each number is 5 minutes, and each small mark between numbers is 1 minute. For example, short hand just past 3 and long hand on the 9 means 3:45.
What do quarter past, half past and quarter to mean?
An hour has four quarters of 15 minutes. Quarter past 3 is 3:15, half past 3 is 3:30 and quarter to 4 is 3:45 – fifteen minutes before 4 o'clock. After the half hour we count the minutes left until the next hour, so 3:50 is ten to four.
Why does the hour hand point between two numbers?
The hour hand moves slowly and smoothly all hour long. At 3:30 it is halfway between the 3 and the 4, and at 3:45 it is three quarters of the way to the 4. That is why you always read the number it has just passed, not the one it is closest to.
How does the Set the clock game work?
You are given a time and need to show it on the clock. Drag the long orange hand to set the minutes; when it goes past the 12 the hour moves on just like a real clock. Drag the short green hand to set the hour, or use the − / + buttons. Then press Check my clock.
How is the score calculated?
Each correct answer gives 10 points plus a streak bonus of 2 extra points for every answer in a row (up to +10). A round has 10 questions: 9–10 right gives 3 stars, 7–8 gives 2 stars and 5–6 gives 1 star. Your best score for each mode and level is saved in this browser.
