How to use the When to Leave for the Airport Calculator
- Enter your flight: date, departure time and whether it is domestic or international.
- Add your bags and security: carry-on or checked bags, and whether you have TSA PreCheck.
- Describe the airport: its size and how busy the travel day is.
- Add the trip there: drive time, traffic allowance and how you arrive (drop-off, parking, rental return).
- Read your leave time and the timeline from leaving home to boarding.
How the leave time is built
Leave home = departure − gate time − walk to gate − security − check-in/bag drop − buffer − parking − drive − traffic. If you are checking bags, the bag drop must also finish before the airline cutoff (45 min domestic, 60 min international here), even when the lines are short.
| Step (normal day) | Small airport | Medium airport | Large hub |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check-in & bag drop (domestic) | 10 min | 15 min | 25 min |
| Security, standard lane | 15 min | 25 min | 35 min |
| Security, TSA PreCheck | 5 min | 10 min | 15 min |
| Walk / train to the gate | 5 min | 10 min | 20 min |
| At the gate before departure | 35 min domestic · 50 min international | ||
International check-in adds about 15 minutes for passport checks, and busy days multiply line times by 1.3 (busy) or 1.6 (holiday peak). These are planning estimates, not live wait times: check your airport's website or airline app on the day.
Tips to cut airport time
- Check in online 24 hours ahead and keep your boarding pass on your phone.
- Travel carry-on only when you can, and follow the 3-1-1 liquids rule so your bag is not pulled for a re-check.
- Fly early in the morning: first flights of the day are least often delayed, though security lines can be long before 7 a.m.
- Reserve airport parking in advance on holidays, and allow extra time for shuttles from economy and off-site lots.
- Know the terminal and gate before you leave; at big hubs the walk or train ride can take 15-20 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How early should I get to the airport for a domestic flight?
Airlines generally advise arriving 2 hours before a domestic flight, especially with checked bags or at a large airport. With carry-on only and TSA PreCheck at a small airport, 60-75 minutes is often enough. Most US airlines close bag check 45 minutes before a domestic departure.
How early should I arrive for an international flight?
Plan on about 3 hours before departure. Check-in includes a passport check, bag-drop cutoffs are usually 60 minutes before departure, and boarding for wide-body planes often starts 45-60 minutes before the scheduled time.
How does this calculator work out when to leave?
It starts at your departure time and subtracts the time you should be at the gate (35 min domestic, 50 min international), the walk to the gate, security, check-in and bag drop (never later than the airline cutoff), your extra buffer, parking or drop-off, and your drive plus a traffic allowance. Line times grow at large airports and on busy or holiday days.
How much time does TSA PreCheck save?
TSA reports that most PreCheck passengers wait under 10 minutes. Standard lines at large airports can take 20-40 minutes at peak times and longer around holidays, so PreCheck often saves 15-30 minutes. This calculator uses 5-15 minutes for PreCheck and 15-35 for standard screening, scaled up on busy days.
What is the bag check cutoff time?
It is the latest time the airline will accept a checked bag for your flight. It is commonly 45 minutes before domestic departures and 60 minutes before international ones, but some airlines and airports use 30-90 minutes. Check your airline's rule; if you miss it, the bag may not fly with you.
How early should I go to the airport during Thanksgiving or Christmas?
Add at least 30-60 minutes to your usual plan. Holiday peaks bring longer lines at check-in and security, full parking lots, slower shuttles and more traffic. Choose Holiday peak and a higher traffic allowance in the calculator to see the effect.
Does the time include boarding?
Yes. You are planned to be at the gate 35 minutes (domestic) or 50 minutes (international) before departure, a few minutes before boarding usually starts. Gates usually close 10-20 minutes before departure, and late passengers can lose their seat.
