| Half hour | 4:30, 9:00 | Grade 1 | Read, then Draw the hands, 9 clocks |
| Quarter hour | 5:15, 8:45 | Grade 2 | Words or Both format to practice quarter past and quarter to |
| 5 minutes | 1:25, 10:50 | Grade 2 | Minute labels on at first, then off |

How the hands are positioned
The minute hand turns 360° in 60 minutes, so it moves 6° per minute: minute angle = minutes × 6. The hour hand turns 360° in 12 hours, so it moves 30° per hour plus 0.5° per minute: hour angle = (hour mod 12) × 30 + minutes × 0.5. Both angles are measured clockwise from 12. At 8:20, for example, the minute hand is at 120° (pointing at the 4) and the hour hand at 250°, one third of the way from the 8 to the 9.
Tips for teaching time
- Start with the hour hand only. Children can say "about 3 o'clock" from the short hand alone before they learn to count minutes.
- Count by fives. Each number on the clock is 5 minutes for the long hand. Turning on the minute labels shows this directly, and removing them later checks that it has stuck.
- Link to fractions. Half past and quarter past match half and a quarter of the clock face, which also builds fraction sense.
- Watch the hour hand near the next hour. At 6:55 the short hand is almost on 7, a common source of "7:55" mistakes. Five-minute and one-minute levels include many of these.
- Keep sessions short. A single page of 6–12 clocks a day, checked together with the answer key, works better than one long sitting.
Frequently asked questions
In what order should children learn to tell time?
Most curricula start with times to the hour (o'clock), then half past, then quarter past and quarter to, then 5-minute intervals and finally times to the minute. In the US Common Core standards, telling time to the hour and half hour is a grade 1 skill, to five minutes is grade 2, and to the nearest minute is grade 3.
Why is the hour hand between two numbers?
On a real clock the hour hand moves steadily, 30 degrees per hour or half a degree per minute. At 3:30 it points halfway between the 3 and the 4, and at 3:45 it is three quarters of the way to 4. The worksheets draw the hour hand in that true position so children learn to read real clocks, not simplified ones.
What does quarter to mean?
Quarter to means 15 minutes before the next hour, so quarter to 4 is 3:45. Quarter past means 15 minutes after the hour (3:15) and half past means 30 minutes after (3:30). Choose Words or Both as the time format to practice these phrases.
How do I make a draw-the-hands worksheet?
Set Activity to Draw the hands. Each clock is printed without hands and the time is written below it. Children draw a short hour hand and a long minute hand; the answer key shows the correct hands in orange.
Can I get the same worksheet again?
Yes. Every sheet has a code printed in the top corner. Type that code into the Worksheet code box with the same settings and the identical clocks are recreated, which is handy for a retest or for printing extra copies later.
Does it use AM and PM or 24-hour time?
No. An analog clock face shows 12 hours, so all times are written in 12-hour form from 1:00 to 12:59 without AM or PM. That matches how telling time is introduced in early grades.
Is it free and private?
Yes. The worksheets and the PDF are created entirely in your browser; nothing is uploaded and no sign-up is needed.
