How to use the Michigan Paycheck Calculator
Enter your pay: salary, or hourly rate with hours and overtime.
Choose pay frequency and filing status for the federal part.
Enter MI-W4 exemptions and check the exemption amount.
Pick your city and whether you are a resident or only work there.
Press Calculate take-home pay to see state, city and federal lines per check.
City tax = (wages including 401(k) − section 125 − $600 × exemptions) × city rate
Example: a single Detroit resident earning $60,000 with one exemption pays ($60,000 − $5,800) × 4.25% = $2,303.50 Michigan tax and ($60,000 − $600) × 2.4% = $1,425.60 Detroit tax a year, about $143.43 per biweekly check for the two combined.

Resident tax figures subtract one $600 city exemption. If you live in one taxing city and work in another, you pay your home city's resident rate on all wages and may get a credit for the non-resident tax paid to the work city.
Tips for Michigan workers
File a city withholding form (for example Detroit's DW-4) so the right rate is withheld.
Michigan has reciprocity with Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin: residents of those states working in Michigan pay only their home state (use form MI-W4 to claim it).
Because the state rate is flat, extra MI-W4 exemptions only change withholding by about $246.50 a year each.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Michigan income tax rate?
Michigan has a flat individual income tax of 4.25%. For tax year 2023 only, a revenue trigger temporarily lowered it to 4.05%, but it returned to 4.25% for 2024 and later years.
Which Michigan cities have an income tax?
Twenty-four Michigan cities levy an income tax, including Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, East Lansing, Flint, Saginaw, Pontiac, Battle Creek, Jackson, Muskegon and Highland Park. Most charge 1% to residents and 0.5% to non-residents who work there.
What is the Detroit city income tax rate?
Detroit charges 2.4% on residents and 1.2% on non-residents who work in the city, the highest city rates in Michigan. Grand Rapids and Saginaw charge 1.5% / 0.75% and Highland Park 2% / 1%.
How much is the Michigan personal exemption?
The Michigan personal exemption is indexed for inflation; it was $5,800 per exemption for 2025. Each exemption claimed on Form MI-W4 lowers the wages subject to state withholding by that amount. City income taxes use a separate, smaller exemption, typically $600.
Is my 401(k) taxed by Michigan cities?
Michigan's state tax excludes traditional 401(k) deferrals because it follows federal adjusted gross income. Under the uniform City Income Tax Act, however, employee 401(k) deferrals are taxable wages for city tax, so the city tax base is larger.
Do I pay city tax if I work from home outside Detroit?
Non-resident city tax applies only to wages earned for work physically performed in the city. Days worked from home outside Detroit are generally not subject to the non-resident Detroit tax, so you may get some of it back on the city return.
