How minimum wage earnings are calculated
Weekly pay = hourly wage × hours (with hours over 40 paid at 1.5× when overtime applies).
Annual pay = weekly pay × weeks worked (52 for year-round work, 2,080 hours at 40 h/week).
Example: in Washington at $17.13 an hour, 40 hours a week for 52 weeks earns $35,630.40 a year, about $2,969 a month or $1,370 every two weeks before taxes. At the federal $7.25 the same schedule earns $15,080.

Things to know about minimum wage
The highest rate wins. When federal, state and local minimums differ, a covered employee is owed the highest one.
Not every job is covered. Some small businesses, seasonal workers, youth during a training period, full-time students and certain exempt roles can be paid differently under federal or state rules.
Overtime rules vary. Federal law requires 1.5× for hours over 40 in a workweek; some states (such as California) also require daily overtime.
Take-home pay is lower. Social Security and Medicare (7.65%), federal income tax and any state income tax come out of these gross figures.
Frequently asked questions
What is the federal minimum wage in 2026?
$7.25 an hour, the rate set by the Fair Labor Standards Act since July 24, 2009. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that is $15,080 a year before taxes. States and cities can require more, and employers must pay whichever rate is highest.
Which state has the highest minimum wage in 2026?
Among states, Washington is highest at $17.13 an hour, followed by New York City, Long Island and Westchester at $17.00 and Connecticut at $16.94. The District of Columbia is higher still at $17.95. Some cities, such as Seattle and several in California, set even higher local rates.
How many states use the $7.25 federal minimum wage?
Twenty states effectively pay the federal $7.25: Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
How much is minimum wage per year full-time?
Multiply the hourly rate by 2,080 (40 hours × 52 weeks). For example, $15.00 an hour is $31,200 a year, $16.90 is $35,152 and $7.25 is $15,080. These are gross figures before income and payroll taxes.
Does the minimum wage apply to tipped workers?
Not always in cash. Federal law lets employers pay tipped employees $2.13 an hour as long as tips bring them to at least $7.25. Many states require a higher cash wage, and some (such as California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Minnesota, Alaska and Montana) require the full minimum before tips.
Why does my city pay more than the state minimum?
Many cities and counties have their own minimum wage ordinances. Employers must pay the highest applicable rate among federal, state and local law. Use the custom wage box to calculate earnings at a local rate.
How often do state minimum wages change?
Many states adjust each January 1 for inflation, while others follow a fixed schedule written into law. A few adjust mid-year: Oregon and DC on July 1, Alaska's next step on July 1, 2026 and Florida's on September 30. Check your state labor department for the latest rate.
