Oregon paycheck formula
Oregon income = wages − traditional 401(k) − section 125 deductions
Federal tax subtraction = your federal income tax, up to $8,500 (2025), phased out between $125,000 and $145,000 of AGI ($250,000-$290,000 joint)
Taxable income = Oregon income − federal tax subtraction − standard deduction ($2,835 single, $5,670 joint, $4,560 head of household)
Tax = 4.75% + 6.75% + 8.75% + 9.9% applied bracket by bracket, minus $256 per exemption credit
Payroll extras: statewide transit tax 0.1% of wages, Paid Leave Oregon 0.6% of wages
Example: a single filer earning $60,000 with no pre-tax deductions owes about $5,020 in federal income tax (2026 rates), so Oregon taxable income is $60,000 − $5,020 − $2,835 = $52,145. Oregon tax = $209.00 + $448.88 + 8.75% × $41,095 − $256 = $3,997.69 a year, about $153.76 per biweekly check, plus $60 transit tax and $360 Paid Leave Oregon.

No pre-tax deductions assumed; transit tax and Paid Leave Oregon not included. Notice the jump at $150,000: the federal tax subtraction and exemption credit are gone, so the effective rate climbs quickly. Frequently asked questions
What are the Oregon income tax brackets?
For 2025, single filers pay 4.75% on the first $4,400 of taxable income, 6.75% up to $11,050, 8.75% up to $125,000 and 9.9% above that. Married couples filing jointly and heads of household use $8,800, $22,100 and $250,000. Most Oregon workers land in the 8.75% bracket, which is why Oregon's tax is among the highest for middle incomes.
Does Oregon let you deduct federal income tax?
Yes, partly. Oregon allows a subtraction for federal income tax paid, capped at $8,500 for 2025. The cap shrinks once adjusted gross income passes $125,000 ($250,000 for joint filers) and disappears at $145,000 ($290,000 joint).
What is the Oregon statewide transit tax?
It is a 0.1% tax on wages, withheld by employers from every paycheck for Oregon residents and for nonresidents working in Oregon. On $60,000 of wages it is about $60 a year. It is separate from the TriMet and Lane transit payroll taxes, which employers pay themselves.
How much is Paid Leave Oregon taken from my paycheck?
Employees contribute 60% of the 1% Paid Leave Oregon rate, which is 0.6% of gross wages, up to the Social Security wage base. Employers with 25 or more employees pay the other 0.4%. On a $2,307.69 biweekly check, the employee share is about $13.85.
Does Portland have a city income tax?
Portland itself has no general wage tax, but two regional income taxes apply to higher earners: the Metro supportive housing services tax (1% of Oregon taxable income over $125,000 single or $200,000 joint) and Multnomah County's Preschool for All tax (1.5% over those amounts, plus another 1.5% over $250,000 single or $400,000 joint). Many employers withhold them only if you opt in.
Do 401(k) contributions lower Oregon tax?
Yes. Traditional 401(k) and 403(b) deferrals and section 125 health premiums reduce Oregon taxable wages and the transit tax base. Paid Leave Oregon is still charged on 401(k) deferrals, similar to Social Security.
I live in Washington and work in Oregon. Do I pay Oregon tax?
Yes. Oregon taxes wages earned in Oregon even for nonresidents, and there is no reciprocity agreement with Washington. You file an Oregon nonresident return; Washington has no income tax to credit it against.
