Estimate your Tennessee take-home pay per paycheck. Tennessee does not tax wages and has no local income tax, so your check is gross pay minus federal income tax withholding, Social Security, Medicare and the deductions you choose. Uses 2026 federal brackets and W-4 rules (2025 also available).

What comes out of a Tennessee paycheck
Tennessee is one of a handful of states that do not tax wages at all. Its only personal income tax, the Hall tax on interest and dividends, was cut step by step from 6% and fully repealed for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2021. Cities and counties cannot add an income tax either, so every Tennessee paycheck is built from the same federal pieces:
Federal income tax withholding, based on your Form W-4 and the IRS percentage method (Publication 15-T). Traditional 401(k) and Section 125 benefits are subtracted before the brackets are applied.
Social Security at 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026 ($176,100 in 2025).
Medicare at 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 in a year.
Tennessee unemployment insurance premiums are paid by employers only, and the state has no employee disability or paid family leave payroll deduction.

Federal figures use the 2026 brackets and the $16,100 single standard deduction. Tennessee follows the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour because it has no state minimum wage law, though many employers pay well above it.
Tips for Tennessee workers
Overtime: Tennessee has no state overtime law, so the federal rule applies: non-exempt employees earn 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Enter overtime hours above to see the effect.
Sales tax is where Tennessee collects: the 7% state sales tax plus local rates of up to 2.75% make it one of the highest combined sales tax states, so budget for it on top of your take-home pay.
Licensed professionals such as attorneys, physicians and CPAs pay a separate $400 professional privilege tax each year; it is not withheld from paychecks.
Use pre-tax benefits: HSA and cafeteria-plan health premiums skip both federal income tax and FICA, which is the main way to raise take-home pay in a no-wage-tax state.
Frequently asked questions
Does Tennessee have a state income tax?
Not on wages. Tennessee never taxed salaries, and its Hall income tax on interest and dividends was phased out and fully repealed for tax years starting on or after January 1, 2021. Today no Tennessee personal income is subject to a state income tax.
Do Nashville, Memphis or other Tennessee cities have a local income tax?
No. Tennessee cities and counties do not levy income or payroll taxes on employees, so a paycheck in Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville or Chattanooga is calculated the same way as anywhere else in the state.
What is taken out of a Tennessee paycheck?
Federal income tax withholding based on your W-4, Social Security at 6.2% of wages up to the yearly wage base ($184,500 in 2026), Medicare at 1.45% plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000, and any deductions you elect such as 401(k), health insurance or HSA contributions.
How much is $58,000 a year after taxes in Tennessee?
For a single filer paid every two weeks with no 401(k) or benefits, $58,000 comes to about $48,780 a year after 2026 federal income tax and FICA, or roughly $1,876 per biweekly check. Enter your own W-4 details and deductions for a personal estimate.
How are bonuses taxed in Tennessee?
Tennessee does not tax bonuses. Federally, employers usually withhold a flat 22% on supplemental wages such as bonuses (37% on amounts over $1 million in a year), plus Social Security and Medicare. The final tax is settled on your federal return.
Does Tennessee have any tax that affects workers' pay?
There is no payroll deduction for state tax, unemployment or disability. Tennessee does charge an annual $400 professional privilege tax to people licensed in certain professions, such as attorneys, physicians and accountants, but it is billed separately and not withheld from paychecks.
Why might my actual paycheck differ from this estimate?
Payroll systems round each period, track year-to-date wages for the Social Security cap, and may treat bonuses, tips and benefits differently. Expect differences of a few dollars per check.
