Type or paste this week's spelling list and practice it the way a teacher gives a test: hear each word (and a sentence) read aloud, type the spelling and see exactly which letters were wrong. Retry the misses until they stick, then print a numbered test with a teacher key.

Look, cover, write with a long flash time

How the feedback works
When a word is misspelled, the tool lines up your spelling with the correct one using edit distance (the smallest number of letter insertions, deletions or swaps that turn one into the other). Letters that are wrong or extra in your answer are highlighted in red, a gap marks a missing letter, and the matching letters of the correct word are highlighted in green. The note underneath says how many letters were off, so "frend" (1 missing letter) feels very different from a word that was a long way off.
Tips for tricky words
Say it the way it is spelled. Saying "Wed-nes-day" or "Feb-ru-ary" to yourself helps you remember letters that are silent in normal speech.
Find the word inside the word. "Believe" has a lie in it; "separate" has a rat in it. Small hooks like these stick.
Group by pattern. Practice words with the same pattern together (ight, tion, ough) so the rule becomes automatic.
Write it, then check it. Typing builds recall, but writing the printed test by hand helps with handwriting tests at school.
Keep sessions short. Stop on a success. Retrying missed words two or three times is better than repeating the full list ten times.
Frequently asked questions
How do I practice spelling words online?
Type your list into the Word list box, press Start practice and the tool reads each word aloud in random order. Type what you hear and press Enter. You get instant feedback, a score at the end and a button to retry only the words you missed.
Where do the voices come from?
The words are spoken by the text-to-speech voices built into your browser and device (the Web Speech API). Nothing is sent to a server. The list of voices depends on your system; if a voice sounds unclear, choose another one or slow down the speaking speed.
What if read-aloud does not work on my device?
Switch to Look, cover, write mode. Each word appears on screen for a few seconds (you choose how long), then disappears and you type it from memory. This classic method works on every browser and needs no sound.
Can I add a sentence for each word?
Yes. Put a vertical bar after the word and then the sentence, for example: friend | My friend lent me a pencil. In practice the tool says the word, reads the sentence and says the word again, like a classroom spelling test.
Are capital letters checked?
By default no, so february and February both count. Turn on Capital letters must match when the capital is part of the spelling being learned, such as days of the week, months or names.
Is my spelling list saved?
Your current list, saved lists, settings and trouble-word history are stored in your browser's local storage on this device only. Clearing site data removes them, so download the list as a text file if you want a backup.
How do I print a spelling test?
Open the Printable test tab, set a title and options (name and date lines, shuffled order, extra bonus lines, word bank, teacher key) and press Print test. The answer key with sentences prints on a separate page.
