The CBSE 9.5 rule gives an indicative percentage only. Universities, employers and exam boards may use their own conversion, so use the formula printed on your marksheet or transcript when there is one. Division boundaries (distinction 75%, first class 60%, second class 50%, pass 40%) are a common Indian scheme; your university may differ.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
It depends on the scale. For CBSE, multiply CGPA by 9.5, so 8.4 CGPA is 79.8%. On a plain 10-point scale many institutions multiply by 10, and some universities such as VTU use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. On a 4-point scale a simple proportion is CGPA ÷ 4 × 100.
Why does CBSE multiply CGPA by 9.5?
CBSE derived the factor from past board results, based on the average marks of the top-scoring students in the main subjects compared with their grade points. CBSE states that an indicative percentage can be found by multiplying the subject or overall grade point by 9.5.
How do I convert percentage to CGPA?
Reverse the formula. For CBSE, CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5, so 85% is about 8.95. On a plain 10-point scale divide by 10, and for the (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 rule use percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75.
What is 7.5 CGPA in percentage?
7.5 CGPA is 71.25% with the CBSE formula, 75% with the × 10 rule and 67.5% with the (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 formula. Always use the formula printed on your marksheet or stated by your university.
Is a 4.0 GPA to percentage conversion exact?
No. A proportional conversion (3.6 ÷ 4 × 100 = 90%) is a rough guide only. Letter grades in the US cover ranges (for example an A is often 93 to 100%), so a GPA cannot be turned back into one exact percentage. Many universities and employers ask for their own conversion or a credential evaluation.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (semester grade point average) is the average for one semester. CGPA (cumulative grade point average) is the credit-weighted average of all semesters so far. You convert either one to a percentage with the same formula.
