Weighted average formula

For each category c with weight wc: category % = points earned ÷ points possible × 100. The final grade is

Final % = Σ (wc × category %c) ÷ Σ wc

where both sums include only categories that already have graded work. In Total points mode the formula is simply Final % = total points earned ÷ total points possible × 100. The letter grade is looked up from the final percentage after rounding to the number of decimals you choose.

Frequently asked questions

How does the gradebook calculate a weighted average?

For each student it first finds the percentage in every category: points earned divided by points possible for the graded assignments in that category. It then multiplies each category percentage by its weight, adds them up and divides by the total weight of the categories that have grades. Example: Homework 95% × 20 + Quizzes 92.5% × 30 + Tests 94% × 40 + Participation 100% × 10 = 9,435, divided by 100 = 94.35%.

What happens to a category with no grades yet?

It is left out and the remaining weights are rescaled, so early in the term a student with only homework and quiz grades is graded on those two categories in the same proportion. This matches how most online grade books show a running grade.

What is the difference between weighted categories and total points?

With total points every point counts the same: the average is total points earned divided by total points possible, so a 100-point test counts ten times as much as a 10-point quiz. With weighted categories each category has a fixed share of the final grade no matter how many points its assignments are worth.

How are blank, excused and missing scores handled?

A blank cell means not graded yet and is ignored (unless you turn on Count blank scores as 0). EX marks an excused assignment that never counts. M marks a missing assignment that counts as 0 points. You can also type a percentage such as 85% and it is converted to points.

Can I give extra credit?

Yes. Enter more points than the maximum (for example 11 out of 10), or add an assignment with a maximum of 0 points in a category; points earned on it are added without increasing the points possible.

How do I import grades from Excel or Google Sheets?

Save or download the sheet as CSV, then press Import CSV. The first row should be Student followed by assignment names. Optional rows whose first cell is Category, Max points or Weight % set those values; without a Max points row the tool assumes 100 points. Exported CSV files from this gradebook import back with their categories and weights.

Where is my gradebook stored? Is it private?

All classes are saved in your browser's local storage on this device and are never uploaded. That also means they do not sync to other computers and are lost if you clear site data, so download a CSV backup regularly. Follow your school's rules for student records.
