Tips for using your result
- Score yourself with an official practice test so the raw-score conversion is realistic. Each correct answer is worth one mark; spelling and grammar must be correct to count.
- Because of rounding, raising one section by half a band can lift your overall score by a full half band when your average sits at .125 or .625.
- Look at your weakest section: many institutions and visa programs require a minimum in every section as well as the overall band.
- Writing and Speaking estimates from practice are less precise than Listening and Reading; ask a teacher to mark them against the public band descriptors.
Frequently asked questions
How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
The overall band is the average of the four section bands (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest whole or half band. If the average ends in .25 it is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75 it is rounded up to the next whole band. For example, an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, 6.75 becomes 7.0 and 6.125 becomes 6.0.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7?
In Listening, about 30 out of 40 gives band 7. In Academic Reading it is also about 30, but General Training Reading needs about 34 because its texts are easier. Exact cut-offs vary slightly between test versions.
Why is General Training Reading scored differently?
The General Training Reading paper uses more everyday texts, so more correct answers are needed for the same band. 30 correct answers is roughly band 7 in Academic Reading but band 6 in General Training. Listening uses the same scale for both.
Are these conversion tables official?
They follow the score ranges published by the IELTS partners (for example band 6 at about 23 correct and band 8 at about 35 in Listening) and the widely used full charts. IELTS adjusts the exact boundaries for each test version, so treat results as a close estimate. Ranges below band 2.5 are not published and are approximate.
How are Writing and Speaking scored?
Examiners rate Writing and Speaking against four criteria each, in whole or half bands. In Writing, Task 2 counts for twice as much as Task 1. This calculator takes the final Writing and Speaking bands as inputs, because they cannot be calculated from a raw score.
What IELTS score do universities require?
Many universities ask for an overall 6.0 to 7.0 with no section below 5.5 or 6.0, and some programs ask for 7.0 or more. Requirements vary, so always check the exact overall and per-section minimums on the institution's website.
