US 4.0 scale: letter grades and percentages
| Letter | Percentage | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| A / A+ | 93–100 | 4.0 |
| A− | 90–92 | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87–89 | 3.3 |
| B | 83–86 | 3.0 |
| B− | 80–82 | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77–79 | 2.3 |

| C− | 70–72 | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67–69 | 1.3 |
| D | 63–66 | 1.0 |
| D− | 60–62 | 0.7 |
| F | below 60 | 0.0 |
This is the most common US scale, but cutoffs vary between schools; some count A+ as 4.3, or start a D at 65%. For a GPA between two grades, the calculator interpolates between the band starts, so treat it as an estimate.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert GPA to percentage?
There is no single universal formula. On a 10-point scale, CBSE and many universities use percentage = CGPA × 9.5. On a 4.0 scale, US schools map letter grades to percentage bands (A = 93–100%, B = 83–86%), and a simple proportional conversion is GPA ÷ 4 × 100.
What is a 3.5 GPA in percentage?
On the common US letter scale a 3.5 sits between B+ (3.3, from 87%) and A− (3.7, from 90%), so it is about 88.5%. Proportionally, 3.5 ÷ 4 × 100 = 87.5%.
What is 85% as a GPA?
On the US 4.0 letter scale 85% is a B (83–86%), worth 3.0 grade points. Proportionally it is 3.4 on a 4.0 scale, 4.25 on a 5.0 scale, and 8.95 CGPA with the ×9.5 formula.
Why do CBSE and universities multiply CGPA by 9.5?
CBSE derived 9.5 as the average ratio between marks and grade points of students who scored in the top grade bands. Many Indian universities adopted the same factor, but others use ×10 or their own formulas.
How do I convert a 5.0 GPA to percentage?
A simple proportional conversion is GPA ÷ 5 × 100, so 4.2 becomes 84%. On a weighted US 5.0 high school scale, honors and AP classes add a point, so converting to percentage is not exact; use your transcript's percentages where possible.
Which conversion should I use for applications?
Use the formula printed on your transcript or stated by your university. If you apply abroad, credential evaluators such as WES make their own conversions, so report the official GPA and scale rather than your own estimate.
