Easy grader formula
For a test where every question is worth the same:
Score % = (total questions − number wrong) ÷ total questions × 100
Each wrong answer costs 100 ÷ total percent. On a 25-question test that is 4% per question, on a 30-question test 3.33%, and on a 40-question test 2.5%. Example: 30 questions, 4 wrong → 26 ÷ 30 × 100 = 86.67%, which rounds to 87% (B).
If questions carry different point values, add up the points earned and divide by the points possible instead; the chart assumes equal points per question.

Quick reference: percent per wrong answer
| Questions | Each question | 1 wrong | 2 wrong | 5 wrong | Most wrong for 70% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 10% | 90% | 80% | 50% | 3 |
| 20 | 5% | 95% | 90% | 75% | 6 |
| 25 | 4% | 96% | 92% | 80% | 7 |
| 30 | 3.33% | 96.67% | 93.33% | 83.33% | 9 |
| 40 | 2.5% | 97.5% | 95% | 87.5% | 12 |
| 50 | 2% | 98% | 96% | 90% | 15 |
| 100 | 1% | 99% | 98% | 95% | 30 |
Tip: print one chart per test length and keep it with your answer key, so grading a stack of papers only takes counting the wrong answers.
Frequently asked questions
How does an easy grader work?
It divides each possible number of correct answers by the total number of questions. With 25 questions, each question is worth 100 ÷ 25 = 4%, so 3 wrong gives 22 ÷ 25 = 88%. The chart lists that for every number wrong from 0 to the total.
How do I calculate a test score percentage by hand?
Subtract the number wrong from the total, divide by the total and multiply by 100. For 40 questions with 6 wrong: (40 − 6) ÷ 40 × 100 = 85%.
Does points per question change the percentage?
No. If every question is worth the same, the percentage is the same whether a question is worth 1 point or 5. Points per question only changes the points column, such as 88 out of 100 points.
What grading scale does the chart use?
By default the common US scale: A 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69 and F below 60. You can switch to a plus/minus scale (A+ 97, A 93, A− 90 …), a stricter 7-point scale (A 93, B 85, C 77, D 70) or pass/fail with your own pass mark. Always follow your school's official scale.
How are scores rounded?
The percent is rounded to the number of decimals you choose (half up), and the letter grade is taken from that rounded value. So 89.5% rounds to 90% and earns an A on the standard scale; choose 1 or 2 decimals if your school does not round up.
Can I grade with half points?
Yes. Choose half or quarter points and the chart lists 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 … wrong, which is useful for partial credit on short answers.
Is my data saved or uploaded?
No. The chart is calculated in your browser. Your last settings are remembered on your own device only.
