How to convert a score to a percentage first
If you have points instead of a percentage, divide your points by the points possible and multiply by 100: 43 out of 50 = 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86%, which is a B on the plus/minus scale.
Frequently asked questions
What letter grade is an 85%?
On the common plus/minus scale 85% is a B (83–86%), worth 3.0 GPA points. On a simple A–F scale it is also a B (80–89%).
What percentage is a B+?
On the College Board style plus/minus scale a B+ is 87–89% and earns 3.3 grade points. Some schools use slightly different cut-offs, so check your syllabus or choose the custom scale.
How do letter grades convert to GPA points?
On the usual 4.0 scale A and A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0 and F = 0. Some schools give A+ 4.3.
Is 89.5% an A or a B+?
That depends on your teacher's rounding policy. Without rounding it is a B+ because an A− starts at 90%; many teachers round 89.5% up to 90%. The converter flags scores that would change grade if rounded.
What is the standard grading scale in the US?
The most common simple scale is A = 90–100%, B = 80–89%, C = 70–79%, D = 60–69% and F = below 60%. Plus/minus scales split each band into thirds.
Can I use my own school's grading scale?
Yes. Choose Custom scale and enter one grade per line with its minimum percentage and optional GPA points, for example A 94 4.0, A- 90 3.7, B+ 87 3.3. Anything below your lowest cut-off counts as F.
