Frequently asked questions
How do I convert percentage to CGPA?
On the common 10-point system divide the percentage by 9.5: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. For example 85% ÷ 9.5 = 8.95 CGPA. Some universities divide by 10 instead, and some use their own formula, so check your institution's rule.
Why is the CBSE conversion factor 9.5?
CBSE worked out 9.5 as the average ratio between students' percentage marks and their grade points over earlier years. It is meant for CBSE's own results; colleges and universities may use a different factor.
What is the VTU percentage to CGPA formula?
VTU uses Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Rearranged, CGPA = Percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75, so 72.5% corresponds to a CGPA of 8.0.
How do I convert a percentage to a 4.0 GPA?
A simple linear conversion is GPA = Percentage ÷ 100 × 4, so 88% becomes 3.52. Many US schools instead use letter-grade bands, where 93% and above is an A (4.0), 90–92% an A− (3.7), 87–89% a B+ (3.3) and so on. Both are shown.
Can CGPA be higher than 10?
No. With the 9.5 factor, percentages above 95% would give more than 10, so the result is capped at 10. The same cap applies to 4.0 and 5.0 scales.
Is this conversion accepted officially?
Only your board or university can give an official equivalence. Use the formula printed on your marksheet or transcript, or enter your institution's factor as a custom factor.
