Weighted Grade Calculator
Work out your current class grade from weighted categories like homework, quizzes and exams, and find the score you need on the final to reach the grade you want. Scores can be percentages, several scores per category, or points.
One category per line. Scores can be percentages (88), several scores (88 94 90) or points (45/50 18/20). Leave the score empty for categories not graded yet.
Set to 0 if there is no final
How to use the Weighted Grade Calculator
- List your categories, one per line: name, weight %, score.
- Add scores as a percentage, several percentages, or points like 45/50.
- Enter the final exam weight and the course grade you want.
- Read your current grade and what you need on the final.
- Check the tables for each letter grade and which category costs you the most points.
Weighted grade formula
- Current grade = Σ(weightᵢ × scoreᵢ) ÷ Σ(weightᵢ) over graded categories
- Needed on final = (target × (graded weight + final weight) − current × graded weight) ÷ final weight
- Points-based category = total points earned ÷ total points possible × 100
Example
| Category | Weight | Score | Weight × score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 20% | 92% | 1,840 |
| Quizzes | 15% | 85% | 1,275 |
| Labs (88, 94, 90) | 15% | 90.67% | 1,360 |
| Midterm | 20% | 78% | 1,560 |
| Total so far | 70% | 86.21% | 6,035 |
With a 30% final, a 90% course grade needs 98.83% on the final; an 80% course grade needs 65.5%.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each category score by its weight, add the results and divide by the total weight. With homework 20% at 92, quizzes 15% at 85, labs 15% at 90.67 and a midterm 20% at 78: (1,840 + 1,275 + 1,360 + 1,560) ÷ 70 = 86.21%.
How do I find what I need on my final?
Needed = (target × total weight − current grade × graded weight) ÷ final weight. With a current 86.21% on 70% of the course and a 30% final, getting 90% overall needs (90 × 100 − 86.21 × 70) ÷ 30 = 98.83% on the final.
What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
If some categories are not graded yet, leave their score empty; they are left out of the current grade. If the weights simply total something else, the calculator divides by the weights you entered, which is how most gradebooks normalize.
Can I enter points instead of percentages?
Yes. Write scores like 45/50 38/40 and the category score is total points earned ÷ total points possible (here 83/90 = 92.22%). Several percentage scores like 88 94 90 are averaged.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted grades?
An unweighted grade treats every point or assignment equally. A weighted grade gives categories different importance, so a 20% exam counts more than a 5% quiz even if both have 100 points.
What letter grade is 86%?
On the common US scale (A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60) 86% is a B. With plus and minus grades it is a B (83–86.99), and 87% would be a B+. Schools vary, so check your syllabus.
