Weighted GPA Calculator
List your high school classes with their level and grade to get your weighted GPA (extra points for Honors, AP, IB and dual enrollment, up to 5.0) next to your unweighted 4.0 GPA. Adjust the bonus rules to match your school's policy.

How to use the Weighted GPA Calculator
- Add each course with its name, level (Regular, Honors, AP, IB or dual enrollment), credits and letter grade.
- Check the weighting rules: the defaults are Honors +0.5 and AP/IB +1.0; change them if your school differs.
- Read your weighted and unweighted GPA at the top, along with the boost from advanced classes.
- Review the breakdown table to see the points each course contributes.
- Copy the results to share with a counselor or keep for applications.
Weighted GPA scale
| Grade | Percent (typical) | Regular | Honors (+0.5) | AP / IB / Dual (+1.0) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 93–100 | 4.0 | 4.5 | 5.0 |
| A− | 90–92 | 3.7 | 4.2 | 4.7 |
| B+ | 87–89 | 3.3 | 3.8 | 4.3 |
| B | 83–86 | 3.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 |
| B− | 80–82 | 2.7 | 3.2 | 3.7 |
| C+ | 77–79 | 2.3 | 2.8 | 3.3 |
| C | 73–76 | 2.0 | 2.5 | 3.0 |
| C− | 70–72 | 1.7 | 2.2 | 2.7 |
| D+ | 67–69 | 1.3 | 1.8 | 2.3 |
| D | 63–66 | 1.0 | 1.5 | 2.0 |
| D− | 60–62 | 0.7 | 1.2 | 1.7 |
| F | Below 60 | 0.0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
Percent cut-offs and bonuses vary by school district. Some schools use whole-letter grades only (A = 4, B = 3), weight Honors the same as AP, or cap weighted GPA at a set number of advanced courses; check your student handbook and adjust the rules above the course list.
Weighted vs unweighted: a worked example
| Course | Level | Grade | Unweighted | Weighted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English 11 | Honors | A− | 3.7 | 4.2 |
| AP US History | AP | B+ | 3.3 | 4.3 |
| Precalculus | Regular | A | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| AP Chemistry | AP | B | 3.0 | 4.0 |
| Spanish III | Regular | A | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| GPA (all 1 credit) | 18.0 ÷ 5 = 3.60 | 20.5 ÷ 5 = 4.10 | ||
The weighted GPA is higher because three of the five classes earn bonus points. Notice that the B in AP Chemistry counts the same as the A in regular Precalculus on the weighted scale: that is the trade-off weighting is designed to reward.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA uses a 4.0 scale where an A is 4.0 in every class. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder classes, usually +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0. Weighted GPAs can therefore go above 4.0.
How do I calculate weighted GPA?
For each course, take the grade points (A = 4, B = 3, and so on), add the bonus for its level, multiply by the course credits, then divide the total by the total credits. For example, an A in AP (5.0), a B in Honors (3.5) and an A in a regular class (4.0), all one credit, give (5.0 + 3.5 + 4.0) ÷ 3 = 4.17.
Is a 4.0 weighted GPA good?
It depends on your course mix. A 4.0 weighted GPA could mean straight A's in regular classes, or a mix of A's and B's in AP classes. Colleges look at both the GPA and how challenging your schedule was, which is why many recalculate GPA using their own rules.
Do F grades get the AP or Honors bonus?
Most schools give 0 points for an F regardless of course level, and this calculator never adds a bonus to an F. Some schools also withhold the bonus for D grades; tick the option to give no bonus below a C.
Do colleges use weighted or unweighted GPA?
Both appear on applications. Many colleges recalculate an unweighted GPA from core academic classes and then consider the rigor of your courses separately. Reporting both numbers, as this tool shows, gives the clearest picture.
How do half-credit classes count?
Enter the credits your school assigns, such as 0.5 for a one-semester class. Each course's points are multiplied by its credits, so a half-credit class affects your GPA half as much as a full-year course.
