How to use the Final Grade Calculator

  1. Enter your current grade in the class, or switch to Weighted categories and enter each category's weight and score.
  2. Enter the final exam weight, the percentage of the course grade the final is worth (for example 20%).
  3. Enter your target grade, such as 90 for an A− or 70 to pass.
  4. Press Calculate needed score to see the minimum final exam score and a table for every letter grade.
  5. Try a what-if score to see what your course grade would be if you scored, say, 75% on the final.

Final exam grade formula

Your course grade is a weighted average of the work done so far and the final exam:

Course grade = current grade × (1 − w) + final score × w

where w is the final's weight as a decimal (25% = 0.25). Solving for the final score gives the formula this calculator uses:

Required final = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

Worked example: your current grade is 88%, the final is worth 25% and you want a 90%. Your existing work contributes 88 × 0.75 = 66 points, so the final must supply 90 − 66 = 24 points. Dividing by the weight, 24 ÷ 0.25 = 96% on the final.

Working out your current grade from categories

Many syllabi split the grade into categories such as homework, quizzes, labs and a midterm. Your current grade is the weighted average of the categories you have finished:

Current grade = Σ(weight × score) ÷ Σ(weight)

CategoryWeightScoreWeight × score
Homework20%92%1,840
Quizzes15%84%1,260
Midterm25%78%1,950
Labs15%95%1,425
Total75%6,475

Current grade = 6,475 ÷ 75 = 86.33%. With the final worth the remaining 25%, reaching 90% needs (90 − 86.33 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 101%, so a 90% is just out of reach, while an 80% needs only 61%. This is exactly what the Weighted categories tab calculates. For other weighted mixes, the weighted average calculator is handy.

Tips before the final

  • Check how the final is weighted. Some courses replace your lowest test with the final, or let a strong final override earlier grades; this calculator assumes a fixed weight.
  • Know the cut-offs and rounding policy. If your teacher rounds 89.5% up to an A−, set your target to 89.5.
  • Total points courses: the final's weight is its points divided by the total points in the course (for example 150 ÷ 600 = 25%).
  • Plan your study time around what is possible: if an A is out of reach but a B needs only 60%, focus on securing the B.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Use: required final = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with the weight written as a decimal. For example, with an 85% current grade, a final worth 20% and a 90% goal: (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = (90 − 68) ÷ 0.2 = 110%. That is above 100%, so a 90% is out of reach unless the final has extra credit.

What if my category weights do not add up to 100%?

The calculator first averages your categories in proportion to their weights to get your current grade, then gives the final its own weight. It also tells you the total so you can check it against your syllabus. If the final's weight is already included in your categories table, remove that row and enter it as the final exam weight instead.

What does 'already secured' mean?

If the required score is 0% or less, you will reach the target grade even if you score zero on the final, because your current work already carries enough weight. Most schools still require you to sit the exam, so do not skip it.

Why does the calculator say a grade is impossible?

If the required score is higher than the maximum possible final score (100% unless you change it), even a perfect final would not lift your grade to the target. The tool shows the best grade you can still reach.

Is the final exam weight the same as the number of points?

Not always. In a weighted system the final counts for a fixed percentage of the grade. In a total points system, its weight is the final's points divided by all points in the course: a 200-point final in a 1,000-point course is worth 20%.

How much will the final change my grade?

Every 10 percentage points on the final moves your course grade by 10 × the final weight. With a 25% final, scoring 10 points higher on the exam raises the course grade by 2.5 points.

Does this tool store my grades?

Your inputs are saved only in your browser's local storage so they are still there when you come back. Nothing is uploaded.
