How the grade is worked out
- Find the first school year in which the child reaches the starting age on or before the cutoff date. That is the year they begin the first grade.
- Work out which school year contains the chosen date (a new school year begins on its start date, such as mid-August or September 1).
- The number of school years since entry gives the grade: 0 is the first year, 1 the second, and so on. Negative values are pre-school years.
- The graduation year is the entry year plus the number of school years, counted at the end of the final year.
Local rules differ and exceptions (early entry, deferral, repeating a year) are common, so treat the result as the default placement and confirm with your school.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know what grade my child should be in?
Find the school entry cutoff date for your area. A child starts the first year of school (such as Kindergarten in the US) in the school year when they reach the required age on or before that cutoff, then moves up one grade each school year.
What is the kindergarten cutoff date in the US?
It is set by each state, and sometimes by district. The most common rule is that a child must be 5 years old on or before September 1, but cutoffs range from about August 1 to January 1. Choose Custom to enter your state's exact date.
What year group is my child in the UK?
In England and Wales the school year runs from 1 September to 31 August, so children born in that window are in the same year group. Children start Reception in the September after they turn 4 and move into Year 1 the following September.
What year will my child graduate?
Add the number of school years to the year they start. In the US a child who starts Kindergarten in fall 2024 is in the class of 2037: 13 school years later, graduating in June 2037.
What if my child is held back or starts early?
This calculator follows the standard cutoff rule. If a child repeats a year, starts a year late (sometimes called redshirting) or skips a grade, add or subtract that many years from the result.
Why does a birthday near the cutoff matter?
A child born just before the cutoff is among the youngest in the class, while one born just after it is among the oldest. The result shows the full range of birth dates in the same year group and where the child falls in it.
Are these cutoff dates official?
They are the common rules for each system as far as we know, but rules vary by state, province, district and school, and can change. Always confirm with your local school or education authority.
