How to use the Handwriting Practice Paper
Pick the page size and orientation. Landscape gives longer rows for sentences.
Choose a line height that matches the child's level: 1 in is typical for kindergarten, ¾ in for first grade and ½ in for second and third grade.
Set the midline and colors, and turn on the shaded middle zone, the descender line or green start dots if they help.
Add a picture box for draw-and-write journals, plus a name and date header and an optional writing prompt.
Download the PDF and print as many copies as you need at 100% scale.
Typical line sizes by grade
The line height here is the distance from the top line to the baseline, with the midline exactly halfway. These are common starting points; handwriting programs and teachers adjust them to each child.

Teaching tips for primary lined paper
Use the line names. Calling the lines sky, fence and ground (or head, belt and feet) gives children simple words for where each letter starts and stops.
Start big, then shrink. Move to a smaller line height once a child forms letters correctly and consistently on the larger size.
Green start dots remind left-to-right writers where each row begins.
Add the descender line when children start writing g, j, p, q and y, so the tails have a clear stopping point.
Draw, then write. A picture box at the top keeps beginning writers motivated: they plan their idea with a drawing and then write about it.
Printing
Print at 100% / "Actual size" so the rows keep their exact height. The Light gray scheme uses the least ink and works well for photocopying a class set, while the colored schemes are easiest for children to tell apart.
Frequently asked questions
What are the lines on handwriting paper called?
Primary handwriting paper has a top line (also called the headline or sky line), a dashed or dotted midline (the belt or fence line) and a baseline where letters sit (the ground line). Some papers add a fourth descender line below the baseline for the tails of letters such as g, j, p, q and y.
What line size should kindergarten writing paper have?
Kindergarten paper usually has rows about 1 inch (25 mm) from the top line to the baseline, sometimes larger at the start of the year. First grade often uses about ¾ in or ⅝ in, and second and third grade move to about ½ in before switching to regular ruled notebook paper. Teachers and handwriting programs vary, so use the size your school recommends.
Where should letters go on the lines?
Tall letters such as b, d, f, h, k, l and t, and all capital letters, start at the top line. Small letters such as a, c, e, m, n, o and s fill the space between the midline and the baseline. Letters with tails (g, j, p, q, y) sit on the baseline and drop below it into the descender space.
What is the shaded middle zone for?
Shading the space between the midline and the baseline shows children exactly where the body of each letter belongs. It is a common support for beginning writers and for children who find it hard to keep letters a consistent size.
What is the picture box used for?
Draw-and-write paper gives young children space to draw a picture first and then write a word or sentence about it. It is popular for journals, story writing, science observations and retelling a book.
Can I make writing paper for older students?
Yes. Choose ½ in or ⅜ in rows, turn off the shading and use the gray or light gray colors for a cleaner look. For regular wide or college ruled notebook paper, use the Lined Paper Generator instead.
Is this handwriting paper free to print?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no watermark. The PDF is made in your browser and can be printed for home, classroom or therapy use as often as you like.
