Plain-text spacing vs document line spacing
Essays and manuscripts that must be “double spaced” (a common requirement in schools and publishing) should use the line spacing setting of the word processor, not blank lines, because blank lines add extra space between paragraphs and break page layout. Blank-line spacing is the right choice for places that only accept plain text: text files, code, chat apps, social posts, subtitle files and email bodies.
How “undo double spacing” works
When text is double spaced, one blank line is added after every line. A paragraph break that already had one blank line therefore becomes three blank lines in a row (blank line after the last line, the original blank line, and the blank line added after it). The undo option turns each run of 2k+1 blank lines back into k: a single blank line disappears and a run of three becomes one.
Frequently asked questions
What does double spacing mean for plain text?
In a word processor, double spacing changes the line height. Plain text has no line height setting, so the equivalent is an empty line after each line of text. This tool inserts those blank lines, which is what you need for code comments, emails, chat messages, subtitles and text files.
How can plain text be 1.5 spaced?
Plain text can only have whole blank lines, so the 1.5 option inserts one blank line after every second line. On average that is 1.5 lines of height per line of text. For true 1.5 line spacing in a document, paste the text into your word processor and set the line spacing there (in most editors: Format › Line spacing).
How do I undo double spacing?
Choose Remove spacing › Undo double spacing. Each single blank line between lines is removed, and a larger gap (which was a paragraph break before the text was double spaced) becomes one blank line, so your paragraphs survive.
What is the difference between “Every line” and “Only between paragraphs”?
Every line adds blank lines after each line, including lines inside a paragraph. Only between paragraphs leaves the lines of each paragraph together and makes every existing blank-line gap exactly the chosen size, which is useful for widening or evening out paragraph gaps.
Will it add extra spaces at the end of lines?
No. It only inserts empty lines. With “Remove trailing spaces” on (the default), invisible spaces at the end of lines are also cleaned up.
Does it work for subtitles or poetry?
Yes. Poems, song lyrics, lists and dialogue often need a blank line between each line. Use double spacing on every line, or turn on “Ignore existing blank lines” if the text already has uneven gaps and you want them all the same.
