Milestone birthdays and ordinals
Milestone birthdays (18, 21, 30, 40, 50 and every decade after) deserve a mention. The tool writes the age as an ordinal number using the standard English rule: numbers ending in 1, 2 or 3 take st, nd and rd (21st, 32nd, 43rd), except 11, 12 and 13, which take th (11th, 112th). Everything else ends in th.
For a personal touch, start from a generated message and add one specific detail: a trip you took together, something they taught you, or a goal they reached this year. Specific details are what make a birthday message memorable.
Frequently asked questions
What should I write in a birthday card?
Start with a greeting and their name, add one or two sentences of wishes, and if you can, mention something specific you appreciate about them or a shared memory. Finish with a sign-off that fits the relationship, such as Love for family, Cheers for friends or Best wishes for colleagues.
What is a good birthday message for a boss?
Keep it warm but professional: thank them briefly for their support or leadership and wish them a good year. The formal and heartfelt boss messages here avoid jokes about age and anything too personal, which is the safe choice for a workplace card.
How long should a birthday text be?
One or two sentences is plenty for a text. A standard SMS holds 160 characters, so the tool marks every message that fits in one text with a green badge. Card messages can be a little longer.
How does the age milestone work?
Enter the age they are turning and the first message becomes an age line, such as Happy 30th birthday. The ordinal suffix is calculated correctly, including the exceptions: 11th, 12th and 13th, but 21st, 22nd and 23rd.
Are funny messages safe to send?
The funny messages are light-hearted teasing about age, cake and everyday life, written to be kind. For a boss or coworker, the funny lines stick to workplace humour. When in doubt, especially for someone you do not know well, choose heartfelt or formal.
Is anything saved or sent?
No. The messages are selected and filled in by your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.
