How the birthday countdown works

Your next birthday is the next time the calendar reaches your birth month and day. If it is already your birthday today, the page celebrates and then counts to next year. The age shown is the age you turn on that birthday: the year of the birthday minus your birth year.

Leap-day birthdays (29 February) are counted on 28 February in years that are not leap years; some people prefer 1 March, which is one day later. Your birth date is stored only in this browser so the countdown is ready next time you visit.

How the countdown is worked out

The target is midnight at the start of your birthday in your device's time zone. The time left is the difference between that moment and now, split into whole days (86,400 seconds each), then hours, minutes and seconds. Because it uses real elapsed time, a daylight saving change before the day is handled automatically. Sleeps are the calendar days from today to the day itself, and weekdays to go count Monday to Friday dates from tomorrow up to the day before. The day after the holiday, the countdown switches to next year.

How many days until my birthday?

Enter your date of birth at the top of the page. The countdown then shows the exact days, hours, minutes and seconds until midnight at the start of your next birthday in your time zone.

Is my birth date stored or sent anywhere?

No. It is saved only in your own browser (local storage) so the countdown remembers it, and it is never uploaded.

How old will I be on my next birthday?

The "You will turn" card shows it: the year of your next birthday minus your birth year.

What if I was born on 29 February?

In non-leap years the countdown uses 28 February as your birthday. In leap years it counts to 29 February.

Can I share my birthday countdown?

Yes. Copy the countdown text, or share a link with ?b=YYYY-MM-DD added to the address so the page opens with that date.

What does sleeps to go mean?

It is the number of nights left: the calendar days from today until your birthday.
