eBay fee formulas
- Total sale = (sold price + shipping) × (1 + sales tax rate)
- Final value fee = rate × total sale up to the threshold + lower rate × the part above it
- Per-order fee = about 0.40, or 0.30 if the total is 10 or less
- Promoted listing fee = ad rate × total sale
- Payout = sold price + shipping − all eBay fees
- Net profit = payout − item cost − shipping cost − packaging − other costs

Tips to keep more of each eBay sale
- Charge realistic shipping. Fees apply to shipping too, so free shipping simply moves the cost into your price.
- Only promote listings where the extra sales are worth the ad rate. On low-margin items, even 2% to 5% matters.
- Check category rules. Some categories have lower rates, and high-value sales pay a lower rate above a threshold.
- Keep track of packaging and supplies. They often add $0.50 to $2 per order.
Frequently asked questions
How much does eBay take from a sale?
For most categories in the US, eBay charges a final value fee of about 13.6% of the total sale, including shipping and sales tax, plus a per-order fee of about $0.40 ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). On a $50 item with $8 shipping and no tax, that is $7.89 + $0.40 = $8.29.
Is the eBay fee charged on shipping?
Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount the buyer pays, including shipping, handling and sales tax. That is why the calculator asks for shipping and the tax rate.
Why does sales tax increase my fees?
eBay collects sales tax from the buyer and passes it on, so you never keep it, but the final value fee is still worked out on the total including tax. An 8% tax on a $58 order adds about $0.63 to the fee.
What is the promoted listing fee?
If you promote a listing, you pay the ad rate you chose as a percentage of the sale when a buyer purchases after clicking the ad. Enter that rate to include it.
What is the break-even sold price?
It is the lowest price at which your payout covers all your costs, so your profit is zero. The calculator finds it for the same shipping charge and fee settings.
Is this an official eBay calculator?
No. It is an independent estimate that runs in your browser. Fees differ by category, seller performance and store subscription and change from time to time, so check current fees before listing.
