Example
CPV
spend ÷ views
$500 ÷ 20,000 = $0.025
Views
budget ÷ CPV
$1,000 ÷ $0.02 = 50,000
Budget
CPV × views
$0.04 × 100,000 = $4,000
Cost per 1,000 views
CPV × 1,000
$0.025 × 1,000 = $25
View rate
views ÷ impressions
20,000 ÷ 110,000 = 18.18%
Effective CPM
spend ÷ impressions × 1,000
$500 ÷ 110,000 × 1,000 = $4.55
CPV from CPM
CPM ÷ (1,000 × view rate)
$8 ÷ (1,000 × 0.25) = $0.032
CPM from CPV
CPV × 1,000 × view rate
$0.03 × 1,000 × 0.20 = $6.00

Tips for lowering CPV
Hook viewers early: the first seconds decide whether an impression becomes a view.
Tighten targeting to people likely to care, which raises view rate and lowers effective CPV.
Test several creatives and lengths, and shift budget to the ones with the best view rate and engagement.
Judge on outcomes: compare cost per engagement, subscriber or sale, not just cost per view.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate cost per view?
CPV = total ad spend ÷ number of views. A campaign that spent $500 and got 20,000 views has a CPV of $500 ÷ 20,000 = $0.025.
What counts as a view?
Each ad platform defines a paid view differently, for example watching a set number of seconds, watching to the end of a short ad, or interacting with it. Always compare CPV within the same platform and view definition.
How many views will my budget get?
Views = budget ÷ CPV. With $1,000 at $0.02 per view you can expect about 50,000 views. Real results vary with targeting, competition and the creative.
How do I convert CPM to CPV?
CPV = CPM ÷ (1,000 × view rate). At an $8 CPM and a 25% view rate (one in four impressions becomes a view), CPV = 8 ÷ 250 = $0.032. If every impression counts as a view, CPV is simply CPM ÷ 1,000.
What is view rate?
View rate = views ÷ impressions. It shows what share of the people who were shown your video ad watched enough to count as a view. A higher view rate lowers your effective CPV for the same CPM.
Is a lower CPV always better?
Not necessarily. Cheap views from a poorly matched audience may not lead to clicks, subscribers or sales. Track cost per engagement and cost per conversion alongside CPV.
