Offering free shipping above a minimum order only pays off if customers add enough to cover the label. Enter your average order value, shipping cost and gross margin to get the break-even threshold, the order value lift you need and a rounded threshold to put on your banner.

How to use the Free Shipping Threshold Calculator
Enter your current AOV without shipping and tax.
Enter the average shipping cost you would pay per order if shipping were free for the customer.
Enter your gross margin on products (price minus product cost, divided by price).
Choose rounding and press Calculate threshold.
Use the suggested threshold as your free shipping minimum and check the table to see how higher thresholds compare.
Free shipping threshold formula
Required AOV lift = shipping cost per order ÷ gross margin
Break-even threshold = current AOV + required lift
Lift % = required lift ÷ current AOV
Profit check: threshold × margin − shipping should be at least current AOV × margin
Example: AOV $52, shipping $7.50, margin 45%. Lift = 7.50 ÷ 0.45 = $16.67 (32.1% above AOV). Break-even threshold = $68.67, rounded up to $70. Check: 70 × 0.45 − 7.50 = $24.00, more than the $23.40 gross profit of a $52 order today.

Low-margin products need much bigger order increases, which is why free shipping thresholds are easier for high-margin categories.
Tips for setting your threshold
Look at your order distribution, not just the average. If many orders sit just below the break-even threshold, a small push (an add-on product) can move them over.
Offer add-ons near the gap: if the lift is about $17, show items priced $10 to $20 in the cart.
Use the real shipping cost, including packing materials, averaged over zones and package weights.
Re-check after carrier rate changes; a higher label cost raises the break-even threshold by cost ÷ margin.
Test and measure: compare AOV, conversion rate and profit per visitor before and after changing the threshold.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a free shipping threshold?
The order value must rise enough for the extra gross profit to pay for shipping. Required lift = shipping cost ÷ gross margin, and the break-even threshold = AOV + lift. With a $52 AOV, $7.50 shipping and 45% margin, the lift is 7.50 ÷ 0.45 = $16.67, so the break-even threshold is $68.67, rounded up to $70.
Why divide shipping by the margin?
Only the margin part of each extra dollar is profit. At a 45% margin, a customer who adds $10 of products creates $4.50 of gross profit. To earn $7.50 of extra profit to pay for shipping, they must add 7.50 ÷ 0.45 = $16.67.
How far above AOV should the threshold be?
A common rule of thumb is to set it somewhat above your current AOV so that many customers add an item to qualify, while it still feels reachable. This calculator gives the minimum that covers shipping; going much higher can discourage customers who are far below it.
What margin should I enter?
Use gross margin on products: (selling price − product cost) ÷ selling price, before shipping, ads and overhead. If you know markup instead, margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup).
Does free shipping increase conversion rate?
Many stores see more completed checkouts when shipping is free, but the effect varies by product and audience. This calculator does not assume a conversion lift; any extra orders you win are upside on top of the break-even threshold.
What if the threshold is far above my AOV?
If shipping is a large share of your margin, the required lift can be 40% or more, which few customers will reach. Options include a flat discounted shipping rate, building part of shipping into prices, or bundles that naturally raise the order value.
